LAS VEGAS -- Twenty-seven-year-old Nick Starr was ready to marry his best friend, Hailey. But they called off the wedding last week.

He tried to get his money back from the place where the wedding was to be held, but was told no. So he had another idea: Why not donate the wedding to a military veteran? But he was told no to that as well.

Starr booked his wedding and reception at the Emerald at Queensridge in West Las Vegas. The $10,000 wedding was paid in full, and when he canceled, management said he could not get his money back.

The contract states the venue must have a 180 day notice to return just a portion of his deposit. Since he was past that deadline, Starr decided to throw a party or wedding for someone who deserves it.

He contacted the general manager at the Emerald at Queensridge and told him he would like to host a wedding for a military veteran instead. Their response? No.

"They said, 'Absolutely not. That's out of the question.' I said, 'You know, then let's take someone that can't afford it and give them a good day. I'm going to have a bad day. Let's him or her have a good day,'" said Starr.

The GM at the Emerald at Queensridge says they will agree to use Starr's money for another wedding, but they will decide who the wedding will go to, not Starr. Of course, Starr disagrees, saying it is his money and he should be able to decide who it goes to.

Both sides now have lawyers working on the issue.

I suppose the venue is well within their rights but can they handle the backlash from this publicity lol

Well it was in the contract... After working customer service for so long I really don't feel bad for someone who doesn't make sure to understand a contract they sign. I don't think they should have to allow another person to have a wedding there. But now with all the media attention they are getting they should have just used it for a vet or random person of his choice.

I don't think they are in the wrong but sometimes you just have to bite the bullet and give in a little.

Hmm... I sort of understand both sides of it... at this point, it's NOT his money anymore. The Emerald is perfectly within their right to just pocket the money and then open the date to somebody else who will also pay. So it's cool that they're even saying "okay, we'll put your money towards another wedding" at all rather than just skipping off to the bank. So yeah, it kind of is their call to say who gets it, and not his.
I'm not really sure why they want to be picky about it though? Are they normally picky about their wedding clients? I guess I don't understand why if they are willing to agree to pass it off to somebody else why it matters so much, and why "absolutely not" to a vet.


The smartest thing for them to do, business-wise, would have been "donate a fully paid for wedding to a war vet? ABSOLUTELY. BRILLIANT." and then to have immediately called all the local news stations about it. ;P

Lol I agree with Beanie. Especially the last part. They could have so easily spun that into an amazing publicity "stunt"
