I'm looking for some treat suggestions for Frodo, now that he seems to be showing sensitivities to, well, everything.

I am looking for something that is easy enough to cut/break into tiny pieces and easy to dole out for training purposes while we are out walking.

Protein sources that are okay:
Beef
Bison
Pork
Rabbit
Fish (his favorite treats are Pure Bites Whitefish, but they are too big of pieces and too crumbly to use all the time)
Any meatless treats (preferably excluding anything with peanut butter, it doesn't seem to sit well with him lately).

I have all beef hot dogs. Cheese. Fruitables Skinny Minis. Bravo freeze dried bison liver. S&C freeze dried beef.
I have been using K9 Granola Factory Coconut Crunchers lately, but at 10.99 a bag, they are a bit spendy when we see other dogs and I go through a ton.

I'm open to treats I can buy and also treats that I can make, if anyone has good recipes. I know there was a tuna training treat that was floating around the forums, if anyone has that I'd love to have that one!

I am so tired of nothing working with him and dealing with the itching and the diarrhea if he gets anything that he isn't supposed to have. Frustration!

TIA everyone!

You can make pate-style canned food into jerky - roll it out thin (1/8"-1/4") and lightly score on a cookie sheet then bake at low heat until dried/jerky-like.

I had a student who had hunter friends that gave her venison which she used cooked for treats.

Gerber or off-brand freeze-dried fruit bits for babies.

"" fruit or veggie puffs for babies.

I also have been using the Blue Buffalo training treat Stix - they have a beef variety with no other proteins and are super easy to break, plus seem to be pretty high value ime.

Similarly, I like the Zukes Mini Naturals, which come in Salmon and Rabbit with no other proteins.

Zukes also makes Z-filets which worked really well for Aeri when she was adjusting to a more varied treat selection and got an upset tummy from rich stuff. We used the chicken, but they do have beef and venison options.

I didn't know that the Z-filets came in beef, that is awesome!
I am going to order some of those and the Blue Stix tomorrow. Thanks!

I had no clue, I am definitely going to try that!

Yea I had a client with a dog that literally couldn't have any protein but venison and nothing carbwise other than rice because she was on an elimination diet for allergies - I got creative! The canned food jerky ended up being a midlevel treat for the dog (a cute little Boykin).

I've been getting most of my treats i the cat section lately. Petco has dried salmon that is the perfect size and very stinky, I'll have to go look what brand it is. Also freeze dried or frozen cooked shrimp. I get the frozen for a dollar a bag at dollar tree

Zuke's has Mini Naturals in rabbit and salmon, Z-Filets in beef, and Jerky Naturals in beef and salmon. They're all single-protein, but not grain-free, unfortunately. Plato has Thinkers in salmon (they're stick-shaped, so really easy to cut up). Pet Botanics makes a salmon-based Omega Treat. Wellness Pure Rewards makes one that's all beef. The shrimp PureBites (the cat ones), if they're big enough. NutriSource has salmon treats. PureVita's Skin & Coat treats are single protein salmon (I don't know how easy they'll cut up, I've never used them).

That's all I can think of lol. I've used most of these for Jack - he gets bored with training treats super easily, so I need to have three or four different kinds at once.

Thank you thank you!

Mandy, I will definitely be making those!

Frodo works harder for crunchy treats than he does soft treats, so I am going to start with the jerky style since they should be easier to crack apart than the thicker biscuit style.

Pet Botanics dog food rolls:

Also come in beef (just couldn't find a picture... it's the blue packaging). We use these a lot at work, just slice and dice to the size you want. It's actually very affordable, too, $10 or so for a 10-lb roll. Petco does not carry them, Petsmart does. (Incidently, Petco carries the Natural Balance roll, which we used to use until we noticed that sugar is the fourth ingredient. So stay away from those.)

I normally use raw ground beef 'cuz I'm lazy and cheap. I'm not squeemish with raw meat, though. You can (obviously) cook it if you are. Either way, it breaks down into tiny pieces perfectly.

lizzy, are those refridgerated or more like the NB roll?

Kimbers, because I am looking for things to use while out and about in public I will be staying away from using raw :)

I have been making the treats that Mandy posted, and my dogs go CRAZY over them. Random dogs at trials try to steal my treats. My cats even try to get them. I've stopped buying treats and I just make up a batch every couple of weeks (I freeze what I don't use) and it's so much cheaper than buying store bought ones.

We have the bison and lamb in the "mini style." I'm not sure how exactly they're cooked, but they feel like a freeze dried treat to me. They're not SUPER easy to cut with a knife but it's not difficult either. I bought mine at the pet expo last year, so if you're planning on going to that they might be there again selling them... I was told they were going to start selling them at C&Ds but that obviously hasn't happened yet :D

And they're MN made which is always nice to support.

I make up the tuna or salmon, dogs go nuts for them. Also I made a new recipe at x-mas for my guys. Did a little experimenting and oh boy was it a hit lol.

1 medium sized sweet potato
Shred with skin on
2 eggs
1 + cups of flour (any kind)
3 tps of oil

mix, greased pan, press into pan, bake at 250 for 20 mins or so, soft, moist and not dried out. Cool and then use a pizza cutter and cut to size.

They freeze very well and the dogs go bananas for them :)

Quinn works so hard for the Old Mother Hubbard minis that we got for SS. They're very easy to break up and perfect for training. Not sure on the ingredients though, but I know they have a lot of flavors.

Northern Biscuits are my favorite probably! Quinn loves them too. They're crunchy, but never get hard even when left out and are really easy to break for training. They're almost a little bit flakey. They have a lot of very unusual flavors that are actually made with the meat source in the name! I can't believe some of the flavors they have lol. Inexpensive, as well.

I started using a new "treat" a couple of weeks ago with my guys, on the recommendation of friend that teaches conditioning for canine athletes.
It is an air dried food, with a jerky texture. It comes in small pieces that are easy to break up, and do not crumble (which is the problem I have with most of the freeze dried or other soft treats). It comes in beef, chicken, or lamb, is grain/gluten free, contains 90% meat, and is made in the USA. I used to use the Real Meat treats and my guys loved them, but now that they made a food, I will be using it from now on. The price is great too. I get a 2lb for $20 after tax.
I used if for my JRT and SBT at the flyball tournament this past weekend. They both posted their new fastest times, and maintained their stamina through out the weekend; instead of getting bogged down like they can from just feeding treats.
