Another Q for multiple dog owners.

Last time Frodo was part of a multiple dog home he would throw a fit if I took one of the other dogs out. Barking, jumping on the door, etc when I would leave with another dog.

Is this common in multiple dogs home?
When/if I get another dog how can I prepare for this or work on it?

Sarama and Docket are hideously jealous if I take just one of them. However, once I am out of eyesight and earshot, they calm down. I just shut the one I'm not taking in the bedroom (where they usually spend the day) while I'm working with the other.

Pepper doesn't care if I take the boys and she gets left behind, but the boys care. They will carry on for a LONG time... Payton with his singing, Auggie barking and throwing himself against the door and doing all kinds of stupid stuff that's likely to break him. I have a video of me doing 2x2 weaves with Auggie and throughout the entire video you can hear Payton singing up in his crate, "WOOOOOO woo woo woooo WOOOOOO wooo woo woooowoowoowooooo WOOOOO..." sigh.

We're working on it, mostly with Crate Games. It's gotten a LOT better in the crates, but I haven't been able to work on generalizing it outside of the crate yet. I eventually want to be able to put one dog in a down-stay and work the other, then switch, and not have to crate or ex-pen anybody out of the way.

UGH! When I got Zuma, I couldn't work her without Classic throwing a hissy fit, like slamming himself against our sliding glass door. So we started working on a place behavior while I was working with Zuma. He already had a pretty solid "Mat", so we just built on that. It started with me giving him treats constantly to now I can just randomly reward him once or twice a session. I started to transition this to me working Zuma outside recently by containing Classic on our deck where I could still toss him rewards and I will slowly move him inside while Zuma and I are outside. I really, really want a Manners Minder so I can work on this easier.

The other thing I do, whenever I leave with one dog, the dog that stays home gets something massively amazing. That way they never even notice that we are gone.

Honestly, I had that issue when i had 2 dogs... but once I had 3, it stopped. The most they'll do is run to the bedroom so they can watch me leave. :)

mine don't like it but they seem to understand that they need to behave to get their turn so they mostly just watch intently. I use it to my advantage and will work one dog in front of the others intentionally then switch to build more desire to work in the "off" dogs

Depends on which dog is being left behind. The whippets don't care. They want to go, but forget after a few seconds. Kaiden is the same. Dekka however can be destructive to things (doors.. windows) if I leave with another dog.

They do look a little disappointed when I go out with one and not the other, but they tend to not make a huge fuss.

Training at home, unless they are out of earshot or otherwise engaged (ie. sprawled out on someone's bed in the air-conditioning) then yes, Abby will carry on like a pork chop. But then, she will bark in her crate a bit if I stop a session to do something else like speak to a neighbour, write some notes, check the oven. So really, there doesn't have to be action with another dog for her to become her bossy little vocal self. Crate games is also making this better for us.
Funnily enough, in the crate relaxing at home she is fine - you don't hear a peep, but the minute training is involved no matter how quiet the environment or whether I'm training another dog or not, she lets it be known that I'm not working with her. Grufffff.... (long pause).... Grufff.....Gruf Gruf.... (long pause) Grrrrrr. Sometimes she is so quiet, it's just like she muttering under her breathe. Just another thing we have to work on. :p

I have worked on taking one dog out of the crate and working on something they already know, or playing, and c/t dogs that are crated for being quiet. And slowly progress it to me and other dog leaving room. They are pretty much okay with the dogs that aren't their best buds, still working on it with dogs that have favorites.

Bailey is a pain in my arse if she knows I've taken Buzz out of the house. Buzz is sad but good. I used to do a lot of one dog on a mat while I work the other and it worked well for situations like that. Leaving the house seems like a whole 'nother problem!

Chloe whines and bitches about it. She's okay as long as she can *see* me with the other dog (for example, she no longer cries if I'm in the kitchen with Cynder and she is delegated in the living room behind a baby gate), but if I leave her site with another dog she sits there and whines and cries and pouts like a little spoilt brat.

Cynder doesn't care and will wait patiently for me to come back.

With Rose and Blackie, if we took one and left the other the one left behind would cry for a bit, but then calm down later. Rose will now pitch a fit if she sees one of the other dogs getting ready to go for a walk and she can't come.

Yep, it's something I'm working on but it's slow going. (I posted a video of Mia being upset in the kennel while I was working Summer. When I lived with my family, if I was working with one of them, all the other four would be upset and barking.

Ozzy gets upset if he can hear me working Knox. That's it. I regularly leave two of them and take one. Ozzy gets a little bit more upset if I've got both Knox and Enzo. (I never leave Ozzy and Knox together)

Judge gets really whiney, he is a whiney dog anyway! lol But he settles very quickly after I leave. LoLa roo roos a couple times but then settles as soon as the door is shut. Hobie could care less.

Judge and LoLa are jealous of each other spending time with me, makes them GREAT in OB stuff!! But they can watch each other work with me and while you can tell that they are wanting to work, they are not carrying on.

Juno cares because she is with me ALL THE TIME. I work with her ALL THE TIME. So yeah it is a little concerning to her when I do something one-on-one with Lucy. She doesn't like, throw a temper tantrum or anything so it's really not a big deal, but I can tell she is like "wtf pay attention to MEEEE!"

Lucy couldn't care less but she has never gotten the same "kind" of attention Juno gets. And she is not attached to me, so that makes her really not care if I spend time with Juno.

I'm actually a little worried about when I get a puppy, since obviously I'll need to spend a lot of time with it... and I know it'll flip Juno's world upside down.

If I leave the house with one dog, for a walk or something, the other three will HOWL and CRY and carry on if they're alone in the house. I can hear them all the way down the block until I'm out of sight. If there are other people in the house they'll sadly stare out of the window.

If I'm working on training with one they others are fine. I can have everybody in a down stay while I work one dog individually. Usually I'm training with Jack and I don't care what the others do, so they usually stay out of the way but close just in case I throw a treat their way or leave the room entirely uninterested.

Aw GUYS!! I wanted you to say this wasn't common!!! Lol

My problem is that I can't have a dog barking in an apartment building every time they are left behind!

In my house.... dear god. Its terrible. I once made the mistake of taking two dogs to training, and leaving one in the car without a crate- car interior destroyed. I went to an agility class once with two dogs- big mistake. The one in the crate SCREAMED the entire time I was running the other dog. My dogs get pretty jealous, but then again I've never really taken the time to work on it so I don't blame them.

Oh god can Pig carry on when it's not her turn! She's a little hellion. Every weekday I head out to work with my neighbour's dog and Pig pitches a fit. She's gotten much better, but she's still whiney when she realizes I'm leaving her behind.

I have to keep her crated while I work Bear, otherwise she constantly situates herself to be in front of him. It's like she's pushing him out of the way and saying "hey, look at how much better I can do that." She's quite the little brat, but we're working on that.

Bear is no where near as pushy. He'll occasionally act pouty if I fuss with the leashes and end up leaving him behind. "Pouty" for him is following me to the door with a sad face or looking mournfully out the window. He doesn't scream or whine like Pig. He also doesn't seem to care when I work Pig in front of him.
