I'm not trying to pry into anyone's personal business. It's just that I've read a few articles in the past few days about retirement planning/saving in this country, and it has me curious to see if Chazzers reflect current trends.

My husband and I have been saving for retirement from the time we got our first full-time jobs, he in his teens and me in my early 20s. It's just a thing we do, lol.

How about you?

Nope. I'm 28 and haven't started. My savings account is to go towards buying a house right now. Once that's squared away I have to make sure I can still afford to eat.

I honestly don't expect to be able to retire ever haha. I just can't afford much and the economy isn't going to throw me a rope here. Maybe when I'm 40 I can start saving? Feh.

No. And it worries me a lot.

I really hope to once I get some credit card debt and my car paid off.

Yes, I am. I have a 401k and am also putting away a bit every month to savings for a house and some for savings for retirement. I really hope I'm saving enough but it's the best I can do right now.

I'm only 18, so I wish I could be setting money aside, but I really don't have it. As it is, I'm going to college, but unable to afford any of the books. (yay for libraries, really old editions, and borrowing from friends)

Not yet but I'm about to start. I'm 25 and this is my first stable job I like enough to at least think I may stay for my working years.

No but I am only 20, and up until a week ago I was only making enough money to put gas in my car lol.

First order of business for me is to get my "car payment" squared away (which is really just money owed to my sister that I can pay off however I'd like), which will free up some funds and I would like to start putting money into savings. Not really for anything specific, and considering I haven't even started my career yet, I definitely don't have retirement on my mind!!.... but just because, well, saving is a smart thing to do.

But these adult-like matters probably won't take place until I land myself a stable full-time job.

Yep. Just the 401k right now but it's grown substantially in just five years. It's nice to see that. I do want to be able to retire, it's sad to see the people who changed careers late in life and may never retire because they have nothing to fall on. We have nurses in their 70s working who want to but can't , many.

Yep! We've been saving since we've been out of college (401ks). We put a good bit in every month, and its very important to us to be able to retire (early, hopefully!).

YES. (But I'm still terrified that I'll never be able to retire).

I had a 401k at my old job that I put 10% of my paycheck into each month. My employer added 3%. DH currently does the same thing. It's ROTH, so it's already taxed. The problem is, my new job (working for the school system) has no 401k. They have some sort of state retirement plan I think, assuming I ever make it to 30 years in the same school system, but I can't bank on that. I need to set up a 403b account, but I can't find a ROTH one through school and the whole thing is just intimidating. It's really stressing me out. We've upped DH's 401k to the max for the time being, but it's still not enough.

Anyone who's taken an econ or finance class knows the #1 rule of investing is the time value of money. A dollar today is worth more than a dollar tomorrow. Investing $200/month at 25 is worth more than $1000/month at age 35 (or that's the gist of it). Zach and I have been talking since we got married that we need to start investing more intentionally, but it's SO intimidating.
