I'm sure I'm no the only one who is a bit uncomfortable wit how they are representing bulldogs in the Sherlock Holmes movies. @-@

We know that the breed didn't look anything like the ones we see now, it would be impossible for those times to reproduce them wit c-sections and artificial inseminations, poor dogs. :(

They were still doing the bull baitings in that period right?

I know it's just a movie, but maybe they could have used another breed that haven't changed so mush?

The dogs of the old bull baiting drawings reminds me of the spanish breed alano español :)

No, Sherlock Holmes is set in 1914 and bullbaiting had *long* since been outlawed. This is an illustration from 1908 and already shows the bulldog looking quite similar to modern dogs

Another illustration, this time a propaganda postcard from World War I (same era)

This picture was taken in 1923, not terribly far off:

So while the modern re-creation of Sherlock Holmes is using a slightly more exaggerated bulldog, just because that's what is around now, they're not going completely away from form.

Thanks for the info :), at least those dogs had necks , longer legs and smaller heads comparing to he ones from today.

I don't think they needed artificial metods for reproduction yet.

Maybe it was shot angles, but the first movie of Sherlock Holmes, the Bulldog looked awfully short. Almost like one of those "mini" EBs.

I suppose he is just more extreme than even I'm used to seeing. :p

Though, today I learned that Gladstone is also a man's bag, and that there is one sitting on my floor right now, ha.

I want an OEB so bad. The Renn. Bullies are nice too, but I'm going off photos I've seen of them working. I've never actually met one.
