We were thinking on adding a second dog in our house, mostly when Pompadour has SA and don't like to be left alone in the house, when we have to go we make sure someone is making company to him. :(

He doesn't chew things when he is alone but he is very attached to me and is always following everywere, unfurtunlly not always I can him wit me were I go or it could be a person to make him company, we have being working wit his SA and getting his confidence up, we made progress but maybe another compatible dog can make him feel better?

When I go out is he cries and sometimes search for me in the house but calms down minutes later, then he goes to stay close wit another person in the house.

His personality is shy, and submissive to other dogs and people, minus when he hears noises outside the house so he barks until the sounds leave or he finds what it is,so he is alert to sounds and keep guard.

He is very nice to people, when I take him on walks and he sees that people are looking at him he loves to impress them he likes to walk on two legs or raise one of his front paws to get peoples attention, he also likes to pose for pictures. ;)

Wit small kids it's different, he had a bad experience when he was 3 months old that a little girl hit him so he is afraid to small kids.

Wit other dogs he is very nice, when he meets one he smells the other dog and then he licks the other's dog face, wags his tail and adopts a playfull pose, he LOVES to play wit other small dogs and puppies, I have never seen him showing agression to them or trying to hump them, however I think a dog that would act bossy to him will make him feel bad instead of better. :(

I'm in a medical treatment that has some nasty side effects so if we get another dog it would be until it's finished :) it's going to take many months so we can still work wit Pompadour before and have time to think on the breed.

I was thinking in this breeds:

  • Dachshound : short or long coated , the three sizes
  • Pomeranian or kleinspit (in FCI if a pom it's over 22 cm then it's a klein)
  • Whippet
  • Italian greyhound
  • Chihuahua short coat or long coat
  • American cocker
  • Another poodle :p

Bump! any suggestions? :)

A person from another forum suggested a papillon, however it would be really hard to find a breeder.

I really like paps, but I'm not sure were to find a breeder close, I imported Pompadour from Mexico but I didn't heard of any pap breeders there :(

I can import a dog from Mexico again, also I know a handler who has good contacts in Guatemala and El Salvador.

No, I don't. Getting him a friend likely may not fix the problem. You should be working on fixing the SA actively, not just making sure someone is always home.

Dekka's Dekka has SA. She lives with 6+ other dogs. She couldn't care any less about the rest of the pack. She cares about the humans. The dogs don't give her any comfort or help. That said, Kerri doesn't make sure someone is always home. We all go on with our live. If Pompadour's SA is at that level, you need to work on it, not just give into it.

I see thanks for the suggestion I appreciate deeply :)

Wit our previous dog Oso we didn't had this problem but he was a GSD/husky mix so I guess he inherited the husky independent mood.

The problem it's that we don't have trainers, ethologys or animal psychologist around here only show handlers.

There's a school but they mistreat dogs beating them :(

I guessed another dog could help, I didn't knew it didn't help in all cases.

How does Kerri deals wit Dekka's SA?

Maybe there's a helpfull book I can buy ?

Honestly I wouldn't call this true SA. Summer has mild SA and when I left her she would go into a panic attack where she'd pace and scream, try to claw her way out of the kennel or room and many times use the bathroom all over the house. I will say though that adding Mia helped immensely now that most the time I leave the two together. However, I don't think it would help with all dogs. I tried behavior mod with her but my room mates were not accommodating at all and it wasn't working. I tried anti anxiety medicine and it made her into a dog who slept all day long and walked around the agility course. I took her off that because I couldn't stand seeing her not enjoy anything.

In Summer's case, she was 4 years old when I bought her and her breeder had never seen these behaviors before. Summer was one of quite a few dogs there. When I moved in with my parents to help take care of my mom when she had cancer, Summer calmed down a lot in the presence of Beau, Rose, and Bernard. I really do not think Summer is happy as an only dog. So once I moved back out I bought Mia and literally right away Summer calmed down. It really might not have worked but I wanted a new dog anyways and from what I knew of Summer's past indicated that she might be happy with another dog around. Now, it's still not a 100% fix in that when I take Mia by herself, Summer still gets upset but not to the point she used to be. I do think I've inadvertently created a bit of a codependency between the two of them because neither likes to be without the other dog. But on the other hand, it's very nice that Summer doesn't go into anxiety attacks every single day when I leave.

As far as books, I like I'll Be Home Soon by Patricia McConnell

Bailey has mild separation anxiety -- it sounds similar to Pompadour. One thing we've really been working on is "forced" separations (he has to stay on his bed) and teaching him to calm himself down. It has actually really helped him. We're doing private sessions with a behaviorist -- what a bummer that you don't have that resource!

I don't know anything about small breeds (sorry!) but I can tell you about Bailey and what I'm looking for in my next dog. Bailey is a bit of an anxious dog who doesn't have a lot of self-confidence (except, oddly, around other dogs -- he doesn't get pushed around); he's also very sensitive, and he's also really bonded to me. So, for his sibling, I'm seeking a confident (but not pushy), stable dog. Basically a dog that is "bombproof." Hopefully her natural self-assurance will help Bailey feel more self-confident and worry less.

So, I don't think adding a second dog will "cure" SA (and I would worry about #2 learning these behaviors from #1 if you're not doing things to address it), but I do think (and hope) it can help.

Good luck!

Dekka has SA, if she is left in a crate she will shred anything within reach trying to get out (almost never damages what is in her crate) If left loose no windows can be open as she goes through screens, doors must be secure as she will open then and climb fences to get to me.

We left her alone in a friends back yard with a solid over 6 foot fence. She scaled it and was whining at the door tryign to get back to me.

She does best loose though, and I do the sort of thing suggest in those books/articles posted.

We do have at least 5 other dogs here and she couldn't care less. When I am gone she wont' eat or drink. Other people make little difference unless I am gone long enough. Generally if hubby is still in bed when I leave for school she goes and sits on his head so she can see out the window. He says she stares out the window all day waiting for me to get home.. Now she is a bit extreme.

Seren however also is a bit SA. She screams, frets and pants when she is left. She loves other dogs (unlike Dekka who I think would be happiest with no other dogs) and plays with them. But the other dogs don't seem to help her at all with her issues. (other people at home do fix the problem though)

If you want another dog for YOU then its worth a try. But getting another pet for your pet often doesn't work out and if you don't really want another dog then it kind of sucks.

This :) If you want a second dog anyway, there's definitely a chance it could help. But it's definitely important to make sure you are primarily getting dog #2 for YOU, not for Pompadour ;)

As for suggestions - it depends. Do you like poodles? If you are enjoying Pompadour than why not look into getting another poodle? If you are looking to try something else I know people here would be happy to give suggestions if they got a little more info. What would you be looking for in terms of energy level, biddability, independence vs. dependancy, shedding, etc? Do you want a dog that needs lots of exercise, is highly motivated to play with you, etc... Or would you prefer a more laid-back, lazy kind of dog?

Thanks for the recommended books, I will try them. :)

Yes Pompadour goes agitated when he notice I'm going out, he cries and/or barks and goes to try to take his leash wanting to come wit me. :(

I give him toys and kongs, most of the times he plays wit them but other not, he does eat when I'm not home but sometimes he is depressed to eat the kong and he eats it when I return, so now I'm making the kongs more irresistible filled wit cooked meat instead of peanut butter.

He doesn't destroy or chew things when I'm out, he likes to stay wit the other people in the house, but if he hears a noisy outside the house he goes to the main door and waits to see if it's me who is returning.

Wow Kerri Dekka sounds serious, looks like a decided dog is not stopped easily  , I better fix Pompadour's before it raises.

I was planning on getting a second dog before I even got Pompadour for my and the first dog company but I wanted to wait until the first dog matured or we were ready for another one, I didn't wanted to have two bouncy pups causing mischiefs and have to train them to get used to the house and people at the same time lol.

So I wanted to wait when the first dog was trained and behaved to introduce another.

Tucker&Me, I do really like poodles I would love a black one, however if I get another dog I want him to be a show prospect too, so another poodle would compete against Pompadour in shows for BOB, unless I wait until he's retired but getting a ch title it's very hard around here since they are so many few shows like 4 or 5 in a year, and they are separated in a period of time of 2 to 6 months each.

So Pompadour already has a junior ch that took a year and a half, but he just stared to get points for his adult ch title. :)

That's why I'm looking into other breeds, it would be better if they aren't in the same group, of the ones in the list above only the chis and the poodles are in the toy and companion group (FCI 9 )

Sorry I didn't answered all the questions yesterday, we had some issues wit the water tubes.

For a second dog I'm looking for a mild energy dog, as security problems I can't walk Pompadour every day but I walk him at least 4 times in a week to have a walk of at least one hour in each. (normaly it's one hour and half)

I prefer strong binds , and dependency bu I can take a more independent dog, and likes to have fun playing.

The type of dog I don't think I can handle well it's a really laud barker (like some min schnauzers) or a hyperactive energy .

As for Pompadour he would be unhappy wit one that would be dominant and bossy to him or one that plays too rough or is not interested in playing.

Shedding can be normal or mild.
