I heard about overdone shar-peis before, a shar-pei adult that keeps the heavy wrinkles as a puppy :(

I saw an adult female in person that was extremely heavy wrinkles, so mush that the ones under the tail covered her anus and the ones of her right shoulder looked like she was wearing a throw rug the wrinkles came from the base of the neck and the same was covering compleatly her elbow and finish at her ribcage. :(

She also had a lot on her hocks so she had hard time walking, her head was heavy too, almost like a bullmastiff.

Didn't look healthy at all, I guess they got her at a pet shop since she didn't look anything like the ones from a breeder (even pet quality) , the owners tried to show her but she was DQ.

It makes me so sad and angry to see dogs in this condition

it's a shame to see them so heavy with skin that it is clearly and literally in their way.

i prefer a smoother Pei, a moderate amount of face wrinkles (right on the forehead, the worried look) and a tad bit of extra skin by the shoulders. i have seen some typey ones i liked the look of, but they weren't overdone. they were what people tend to think of, i suppose.

This is the look that I like...

Menchi has some loose skin, but she is not just a waddling mass of wrinkles.

There is also the traditional pei also called a bonemouth which has a dry muzzle and less loose skin.

I think the bitch in this photo is stunning, but it is more difficult to find a traditional pei here in the US.

The breeding in the US is actually what led to the more wrinkled appearance of the breed. The excessive wrinkling and some of the genetic traits that lead to it are also tied to some of the breeds health issues by the way.

OT topic but I never noticed how low the hocks are on a pei! That bone mouthed dog has very straight hindlegs, but REALLY low hocks. Would love to see that dog in motion.

Ask and you shall receive :D

While it is not the lady from the picture it is a bonemouth moving nicely through parts of this video.

There is even a meatmouth in the video as well :)

That bonemouth dog is stunning. OMG! I like the above wrinkled dog too as the wrinkles are not extreme. It's pretty depressing that dogs are bred for a look that ends up crippling them.

We have several of japanese type dogs here at my work and they pain me seeing their straight legs. I always wonder what is going on inside the body and how it effects them in later years.

That was a really cute vid. But that dog had much more angulation than the one in the pic. I was wondering how such a straight dog moved. Ie does it look dramatically different than 'normal' dogs.

Wow Moth, both are beautiful :D , the bonemouth it's close to the ones on older pics and paintings.

I wish I had a pic of the dog I was talking about but I didn't want to feel like I was stalking them

Do you have pics of overdones?

Unfortunately I have no pictures of peis that look as bad as that. I have seen what you are talking about.

In the pei community we often discuss this issue. One of the other pei owners shared the following video as this is not a thing that is limited to our breed, but there are many breeds that struggle with the popular in the ring appearance vs the functional appearance of the breed as discussed in the standard.

The bonemouth is the way these dogs looked when they came to us and the way they still look in their homelands.

That being said my little girl is a beauty I think...not that I am biased or anything ;)

i can't think of the breed name, but it's on the tip of my tongue.
it's some sort of molosser mix that has an INSANE amount of wrinkles and extra skin. that's what the overdone Peis remind me of.
i believe it is a breed developed in China, large and generally red in colour. i swore it started with a D but i may be wrong.

ETA: FOUND IT! Dosa Inu
i don't believe this is typical of the breed, but i don't know enough about it to know whether it is. googling it gives me a lot of dogs that look to be Tosa, but i don't know if it is a spelling error on someone's part, or confusion, or if these dogs are truly meant to look more like Tosas than blankets. anywho, this is what they can look like, at any rate:

in my excitement, i forgot to put that from what i've read, these are called 'Dosa Inu' or Korean Mastiffs. when i found them years ago, i could only find one page on them, and it wasn't in English. but the pictures on the website showed dogs like that, and worse.

sadly, i have seen Peis that look almost identical to this. from breeders and in rescues.

the bonemouths are such nice dogs. and slighter meat mouths as well. i don't know why people can't just be happy with the moderate amount of wrinklage and extra skin.

I remember a thread about the dosas, if I'm not mistaken it's a mix of neos and tosas.

Bingo! I forgoten that I did took pics of the pei months ago (not in the last show) they are blurry but you can see the giant throw rug wrinkle over the right shoulder I was saying, as well the hocks:
