At what point do you find yourself concerned if a female "misses" second heat? Or rather is coming up on a year from their first heat with no signs of a second heat.

If that is something that concerns you, what do you do?

If you were expecting to breed on that second heat it can be frustrating. Also mine tended to start super amazingly late which was a little concerning at the time. 18 months in a toy breed is nearly unheard of yet mine started at 18 months and 20 months and didn't cycle again until 9-14 months later.

I don't tend to worry too much about missing heats - when they happen they happen. If you're trying to plan I suppose you can visit a repro vet to find out what's going on.

I use the same theory as I use with myself.. I don't worry about missed periods unless there are any intact men around ;)

lol totally kidding. but um, perhaps as with people it could be a stress thing? change in environment?

We have no plans of breeding yet, maybe around 2.5-3 yr after titling/testing, etc but it's just odd and yes, a bit frustrating.

Sloan came in May for her first heat. She was 1 yr March 7. We excepted another heat in Nov but she's still dry.

I have an intact male with her daily and, well, he's not told us anything. He does a lot of tasting, all the time, which threw us off, but no real signs.

My TD is convinced we missed a heat because she's so lean and active but I'm not convinced, again, the intact male with her all the time (when not unsupervised, then they're crated) but maybe he's just as dumb as we all think he is. LOL

I just want to clarify if I should be concerned at any point. If she turns up sterile, no big, a bummer, but we'll be okay. If it's anything not okay, I'd love to know and or know when I should be anything but okay.

I'd ask her breeder if you ccan. What is normal for their dogs etc.

The one bitch I had who was off came in at 18 months her first time and cycled I think 9 months after that. After her 2nd cycle she was reasonably regular, but this was abnormal for that line to come in season so late. My breeders said normally by 9 months all her girls had been in.

I attributed some of it to her not being around any intact males and also being the only intact bitch that I had at the time.

She also didn't take the first couple of times she was bred and I found out later she had hypothyroidism.

It's kind of up to you how far you want to take it. You can go all out and take her to a repro vet, or you can just wait it out. If she's around an intact male 100% of the time I can guarantee you haven't missed her coming into heat.

Well, this morning my neutered male keeps trying to mount her and she's snarking. Maybe I just had to post this... lol

I asked her breeder a while ago and he said it was unusual but he wasn't concerned.

I'll keep you updated. I just want a schedule!

Wanna bring her over to my place and try to pull Miss Cheeseface in as well? :p

I've been wishing for a month that she'd go in and get it over with before the spring trial season starts up...but no dice. I'll give her 3 more weeks, then she has to wait til late June!

...yeah I'm hosed :p
