Puppy Bonding Question

So our little bundle of joy, Indie, is 8 weeks old and has been having a great time so far. She has gone to work with my SO twice (raw feeding pet store but she stays in her crate in the backroom and will until all of her shots are complete) and I pick her up around lunch time when I get off. She is quiet in her crate and sleeps all night without a peep. She is feisty when playing and loves to play. She has had very few accidents, eats perfectly, and adores Aero. However, I don't want to risk her bonding too strongly with him and not enough with us humans. I've never had 2 dogs at once, so, how did you guys go about bonding with a puppy without your older dog getting jealous/upset? I don't want to lock him in a room so we can have 1 on 1 puppy time if I don't have to. Any suggestions?

I would assume Aero is not Human.

I got Savvy {F Sheltie - outgoing} 1 year ago when she was 7 weeks and she sounds like Indie in what you describe in qualities. She became more dominate as she became more confident/older in her new home and with us and Cody.
Cody {M Boston} was 9 years when Savvy was brought home.
Before Savvy we had Sassy {F Sheltie - very shy} and she died 2 months before we brought home Savvy.

So ... Dogs know how to mix and relate w each other and how they share home together.
Its instinct. Its also a special bond and not the same as with dogs they meet in public.
The only way dogs bond more to other dogs than their owners is if they are neclected or abused by human owners.
Puppies should be held and allowed to nap next to human owners.
Your other dog needs to learn each have their own time.
Locked rooms are not advised. Time outs and down time is best when doing this.
It will be just fine but note we put Sassy in Petsmart type puppy training after her shots were complete and we did this mostly for social skills with other puppies.

Thanks - yes, we already have training lined up for January. Aero is our 1 year old male Aussie. We've had him since he was 10 weeks and he is more submissive than Indie will be - I can already tell by her outgoing nature. Indie is a cuddlebug and likes to snooze on the couch. I just didn't know if there were any tips on how to get one on one time without Aero feeling like he's being ignored. Aero is pretty perfect in every other aspect with the puppy (they eat/drink together with no fuss, share toys, play and run around together, nap together) except that he gets jealous of attention not being on him. (ie - if i'm playing with the puppy and not with him he feels the need to force himself between us)

You worry too much.

Once you start training with her, you'll be in class once a week without Aero. And if you feel the need for some one-on-one time with her before that, send him across the street to play with Auntie Jes and the heathens. Or send her if you want some alone time with him. I promise I won't complain too terribly much.

this is why you need to move in to evil neighbor's when he moves so we can have a super house with extended back yard +5 bonus!

I raised littermates and didn't separate them nearly as much as I should've and it definitely hurt my bonding with both of them. I didn't bond with Frodo until he was 4 years old and an only dog.

Obviously this is different because I had littermates and you have already had time to bond with Aero, but given my previous experience if they were my dogs I would err on the side of caution and have some one on one time with each every day. Even if it is just a quick training session every day where the dogs get swapped out.

Payton was getting one-on-one time with me pretty much since he came home... twice a day he got training sessions all by himself because I was hand feeding him his entire meal while working with him. At night, he went in the crate to sleep, and Auggie got alone time with me while I got ready for bed and stuff (and of course Auggie was the only one sleeping on my bed at the time so he got extra snuggles and stuff at bedtime.)

I do crate one and work with the other - sometimes I shut Auggie away in another room but then he throws a jealous fit and tries to break the door down, so crating works better for the health of the doors in our home. (We're working on that...) So just about every day they are getting one-on-one time with me. But it's just short sessions a few times a day, not like I spend an hour with just one dog while the other is away.

For me it was less about "don't want Payton to bond too much to Auggie!" and more about just wanting to work on my relationship with Payton - and not letting my relationship with Auggie go by the wayside either. It could have been easy to drop Auggie now that Payton is around since Payton needs a LOT more work than a six year old dog, obviously, but that was never the idea, LOL. So Auggie gets plenty of time to be trained and play with JUST me too. Pepper got one-on-one time too... that's just how it is in our house.
