For some reason potholders came to mind, but I'm not sure they are actually a great gift.

Depending on the price range...
Fancy chocolate, coffee, food, etc.

I'm actually surprised that's all I came up with. Man I am hungry, if I think of more I will let you know.

How about hot cocoa in a jar? Mix together the following and put in a 1 quart jar (mason jars work great):
2 cups nonfat dry milk
1 cup sugar
1/2 cup cocoa
1/2 cup nondairy creamer
1 dash salt

Write the following instructions on a card and tie around neck of jar:
Add 4 to 5 tablespoons of mix to mug and fill with hot water or milk. Stir.

You could even include a mug with the jar of cocoa.

What i'm planning on doing for a gift exchange is a to-go mug from starbucks with some hot cocoa mix and a small (think mini bar) bottle of bailey's in a cute gift bag :)

Movie theater gift cards are always good.

Also, I like to custom make an ornament for someone. The little recycled cardboard blanks are like 99 cents at Michael's or AC Moore's and the decoupage glue is cheap. Then just go to town on some old Christmas cards and some tissue paper and have a good time.

Gift cards are always a great gift. I mean, you can't go wrong with free money.

wine or move tickets. honestly, while food is great...around the holidays everyone gets so fed up with the massive amounts of food coming their way.

At a gift exchange I did last year, someone bought some cheapy massage pillow...everyone was fighting over it - I ended up with it :) It was a great & different gift.

I got once and really liked

Bottle of wine, and all the making for spaghetti including a nice bowl. It was like a nice dinner kit ;)
