Looking for smaller sport-dog suggestions

So someone I know and respect has a litter of Border-Rats (Brats!) planned for the coming year. I really like the BC she's using. Don't know the Rat Terrier. But I feel like I've made a commitment to the BC pup from Steve's breeder. I don't know what the right answer is, or if I even have enough clout to get a Brat puppy. Bah.

I think you could do it. Maybe get to know the RT breed somemore and fiqure out if you could live with a dog like that.

What about a Brat litter draws you in?

Mostly the breeder and the other dogs she's produced. She bred a litter of BorderJacks out of this same bitch and I know two of them and they are awesome dogs. I wouldn't go looking for a Border/Rat mix, but this woman makes nice dogs.

Totally dig. I've been wondering the same from good breeders, who have long waitlists and good performance pooches..

This lady knows and likes Steve, though, so that's got to be a good start. The other places like Blue Cedar.... the whole idea of contacting them is totally intimidating.

Niiice. The contacting these people who don't know me is totally scary. Two kennels with performance cockers have now contacted me. I feel better And I have 4-5 more suggestions to go look at. I want a puppy now!!!! lol.

I don't find sport mixes to be height dogs. They're just too big, IMO.
I took the plunge last winter and got myself a height dog. A JRT. Sport/working bred. I wanted an easier dog to run than my Giants. LOL! Well, he is in terms causing me physical pain in the lanes. (it's not Flyball until there's blood, right?) He's incredibly drivey, and loves to work but he is also a royal pain in the ass. He's not good with cats. **** terriers. If I had, had the space I would have gone with another Giant. With that said my little JRT hellion is one cool little dog and I wouldn't trade him for anything.

Really? Lots of Borderjacks/Borderstaffs as height dogs in this area. 10-11 inch jumps, which is fine. We're running slow height dogs that set 10 inch jumps right now.

To be honest, I'd rather a little bit bigger height dog.

And yes, Bogart, potentially. But nobody's breeding small doodles for sport.

I see people here saying poodles do real well , what about adding a greyhound and getting a strudier faster dog?

Blue cedar is simple to contact, same with Connie Croley and Lisa Kronz, just shoot them an email. I went through talking with each of them before I decided against my sport mix.

Honestly Elegy... a brat combo is too unproven for me but if you want to take a gamble and have some fun it may be a great choice. If I were you I'd go with what I know works and thats a border collie, borderstaffie, or even a borderjack/stack. You could find a small one, we have had two BC height dogs and they both can fly and are extremely reliable.

At this point, I'm just going to wait and get my BC pup next summer. Probably won't be a height dog (though who knows), but oh well. I love the mama, though she hasn't done much yet. She's so much saner and more thoughtful than Steve, even though she's only a couple months older. I've never met the male, but he was bred by Rocket Relay, ran 3.7s in flyball, finished his CD with a high score of 195, and produced some nice-runnin' flyball pups out of Quicksilver's Shiner.

Having two herders is fun, you won't regret it. ;-)
