Litterbox Woes....

My foster persian Dick Cheney has moved on to his new home, where he is adored and rules the roost. I had not planned on fostering cats any longer.
Well, you all know what they say about the best laid plans....

A person at my internship has a coworker who wants to get rid of her persian. Like, yesterday.

The history as told to me:
She has had 'Fluffy' for 2 months. He was adopted from the pound, no history on him. He is now neutered and UTD on all shots. Fluffy has consistatnly pooped outside of the litterbox since she brought him home. She has tried confining him with the box in a bathroom, and he pooped next to the box instead of in it. She has tried different litters.

Fluffy has been checked and medically cleared. He is otherwise happy and loving.

Before he was adopted, he was kept at the vet clinic for 2 weeks, while he got over a UR infection and waited to be nuetered. He did use the litterbox appropriately there, so he does understand the concept.

For right now, my plan is to confine Fluffy in the large dog crate with his box when he is not being directly monitered. Then, when he proves he can be trusted, I can give him more freedoms. Hopefully we can work up to having run of the house.

In the past week, Fluffy has urinated outside the box for the first few times, but she feels like he is responding to stress in the home, as her husband wants him gone right now, and is not shy about showing it.

She wants to have Fluffy PTS, so I am the person of last resort. Any other suggestions for a persian on his last chance?

Stress, box type, and litter type would be where I would start. It's also possible if he's a really flat faced persian that there may be some sensory issues at play.

My first thought is to change the box - perhaps it's not big enough for him to feel comfortable pooping in? Or perhaps he would prefer to have separate boxes for pee and poop (I know several cats like this lol).

He comes today! I got the type of litterbox and litter that was used at the vets office, which is the last place he was using the box properly. So he will have small box for the crate, a large box in the bathroom, and another large box in the kitchen (gross, I know, but it's a 400 sq foot apartament, not a lot of options). Cheshire, my current persian, is fascinated, since she has a single box.

So, I've renamed him Ezra and.....all that worrying was for nothing! Ezra has not had a single litterbox miss, and has even earned his free time at night. If things keep going well, he's going to be allowed out while I'm at work, too, and can go up for adoption quickly.

I'm not entirely sure what the issue was at the other house, but he came in very hungry and thirsty, so I'm wondering if the other owners 4 cats weren't bullying him away from the food, water, and litterbox, so he just decided to go somewhere with less competition.

So glad all is going well. When our other cat was alive, he used to chase our other cat away from the litter box at times. I bet that is exactly what was happening at his previous home.
