Why would a breeder sell a parti colored poodle for more?

I thought parti colored (that is, a poodle with a coat of two or more colors) was a disqualification in the ring? But there's a breeder of standard poodles up here in NH who sells non-show solids for under $800, and yet sells partis from $1000 to $2000.

Is it a demand thing? Do some people really like partis and are willing to spend extra on them?

On a side note, can you think of other instances where dogs with disqualifications are sold for more? Long-coated German Shepherds are bred and sold by a few enthusiasts. Hmmmn....

It's not a DQ in UKC. The parti poodle club says there were partis in the breed's history. There's a breeder here who breeds partis as well as solids and is well known in UKC poodle circles. Her dogs are stunning. I have to say if I thought her dogs could rock in the agility ring consistently I'd consider one. Sadly only a few of her lines have done agility at this point. They all do confo.

Historically, the multi-colored Poodle is well documented: writings, drawings, and paintings from the 1700s and 1800s include many examples of these colorful dogs. However, around the turn of the 20th century, for arbitrary reasons, the Poodle Club of America disqualified non solid-colored Poodles from conformation showing.

While multi-colored Poodles remained popular with the public, they were not seen in the show ring for almost 100 years. At the turn of the 21st century, a few dedicated breeders led a movement in the U.S. to return the multi-colored Poodle to his rightful place as a well-bred competitor in the breed ring and as a loving companion in people's homes
Multi-Colored Poodle Club Of America. A Poodle Club devoted to ALL colors

I know a number of poodle club of Canada breeders that agree it's political, but they are happy with where the politics stand.

It would be as political as the fact that sable american cockers were able to show conformation until the 80s in the AKC. The american cocker club of america took a vote and made it an arbitrary DQ. You can still show them in the CKC though. The vote didn't win here.

it's not uncommon for "pups for bucks" type breeders to sell "fancier" or "rare" colors for a higher price. they're more in demand because they're more unusual.

but yes, there are people out there responsibly breeding partis. they can be shown in UKC and i believe also in europe.

Parti-poodles can be shown in UKC. And I hear because of it, they are very competitive.

Some breeders, like elegy said, charge more for the fancier/flashier/rarer colors because they know someone will pay the money for something that no one else will have.

Also some may be at a pet price vs show dog price. Perhaps contacting the breeder and asking them?

I know that a mini bull terrier will cost about $ 3000 whereas the regular size is more like in the $ 1200- 1800 range I believe. I am not sure if that is a demand thing in this case as I am not sure why minis cost that much. I do know they are not easy to find though.

I do know someone who raises partis in red, black and phantom in toy and mini for UKC show and registered AKC as well. Quite a bit of price with parti poodles has to do with color pattern (clarity, distribution, and how it will appear in a show coat), show quality, and size produced where it comes to price.

Out of a litter of six it's fairly normal for her to place four as pets/performance (usually splash puppies without enough white, or some mottling of colors that would looks off or muddy in a full show clip), keep 2 as show prospects, and have one meet her standards as a show dog. Even then she may not have a dog who is suitable for breeding to her program. These prospects are usually snatched up at 6-8 months once people are sure that the bite is correct, the patellas are normal, and both testicles are down (poodles are notorious for cryptorchidism).

That said her partis aren't that much more expensive as pets than her "normal" akc reds, blacks, and creams. Her show partis are absolutely more expensive and her waiting list is pretty long for show prospects.

I would think its because they are 'different', the bad breeders think of an extra money scheme. Just the same with rare colours of puppy breeds when one comes out. Like white GSD's, and fox red Labs, here those always go for more, as they are not all that common yet. Getting there, but not seen as much as others.

I really dont understand why some breeders charge more for a show prospect puppy at 8-12 weeks. There has been no more effort or cost put into the dog at that point. Now a 6month old breeder keep back thats different.

Combine that with the fact that unless there's something blatantly disqualifying it's littermates at that age, you don't necessarily know which one is going to be a better show prospect until they start maturing. The 6 month old keep back, you're probably going to know whether it has full dentition at least.

Like others have said, you can show in UKC with them. i think partis are really cute, and may be intrested in one, one day.
Cant beat a pure white poodle though lol

Romy- Verry true. Also the training and added expense to keep something the size of a dobe or zoi till it's 6 months.

Cilla's local yeah. Rumour and Loki have trialled AAC. But I'd want a more proven track record as I enjoy doing well in agility.. and wanna stack the cards in that favour. A puppy from her last parti litter went to an AAC competitor.. but I want more proven performance titles.
