Jordan is having puppies

The puppy's for myself, I've been searching for a collie breeder for forever and FINALLY Moxie had a breeding. I told her from the beginning that I preferred a male, I never thought Jordan would give us 8! I hope to get one of the smooths, we'll have to wait and see which ones turn out smooth.

Of course I'll be training the puppy service dog behaviors, so he'll be able to do demos for us.

At what age can you tell if pup will be a smooth or rough?

It depends... some colors and markings you can tell at birth if they are rough or smooth.... others might take a week or two.

I had a Collie litter back in July... and I thought all looked smooth (sables, sable merles, blue merles and tris is what I had)... and they all ended up smoothes.

Sables and sable merles are easiest to tell (for me).... tri-colors are next easiest for me to tell on.... Blues usually take me a day or two or a week to totally decide on..

Smooths have real clear distinct pin point lines between the black and tan on their faces... where roughs are more smutty looking..

Rough sables have really dark heads and masks... smooth sables have really light heads, often with dark rings under their eyes..

Blue merles are harder for me to tell on right at birth...

They are adorable, and I enjoy seeing threads of puppy pictures of breeds I rarely get to see, let alone as pups!!!

Today it was easier to tell who might be what coats. The breakdown is:

3 Male blue merles.
1 smooth
1 rough
1 rough harlequin (she was really hoping he'd be rough! )

3 Sable merles
1 smooth female
2 male, we *think* one rough and one smooth (she might have a better idea now, I haven't seen them since early this morning) It's hard to tell on them because they are way darker than most sable merles we've seen in person. One seems to have the widow peak mask but it's hard to tell the way it blends with the other dark fur.

3 Sables males
I think one for sure was smooth. Maybe? Don't remember. We had the same problem with the masks. Bleah. She might know better now, hopefully she'll pop on and comment.

She was really surprised about the harlequin, but a quick call to Jordan's breeder revealed that she's had a couple crop up in that line. And the sire has a lot of Tallywood and Gambit behind him, she actually managed to find a picture of a harlequin rough bitch relative on that side in an old catalogue.

Here's a pic of everyone together! She has a show next weekend so I might be house/puppy sitting.

Was looking at the pedigrees on her website. There is some Deep River back there.... Deep River are well known for their Harlequin Blue Merles...

The sire of my puppies (now 12 wks - new pics on the photo section of this forum) is a Deep River dog... I'd LOVE to have a merle like that.... on day.

I've been busy with a paper but now that it's turned in I can post how CUTE those pups are and how very envious I am that you get to spend time with them! We will need picture updates as often as possible

Are they in any way related to Logan?

How is the Harlequin boy going to turn out? I looked at pictures, but I didn't get much results...
