You know, that's always been a point of contention with me. I've always had dogs who guarded, and you know what? It's their instinctive DUTY to go in ahead of me to check things out, to look around dark corners, to be where they can get between me and anything they consider a threat. It's what they DO, and trying to break that natural behavior seems like a really good way to create an anxious dog rather than a calm, confident one. I just seems like common sense to me.

Heh my dogs aren't guardian dogs and they walk in front of me all the time. That's just how it works generally when you walk a dog. How fun would it be to drag the dog behind you?

It seems stupid and pointless to me to force the dog to heel and walk perfectly beside me on a walk that is for them to get out and about. If they want to go ahead and sniff then they can.

Heck, 90% of our walks aren't on leash so they're usually anywhere from 20 yards ahead of me to 20 yards behind me.

Does it make any sense if your dog walks or not in front of you? What it has got to do with it? I don't get any relation to that. I dont get the point. Honestly!

So...what does Milan think of guide dogs? They kind of have to be in front...

I prefer that my dogs walk in front of me. That way he/she isn't veering into me or vice versa. And I can also see what is going on ahead of me and have time to react accordingly.

As it is, I'm always pushing a jogging stroller and whichever dog I'm walking is always walking right beside the stroller.

Guess I'm just weak and subservient.

Izzie walks in front... on account of she gets all tangled up in my feet if she walks behind. That and i like to look at my dog when i walk her, her bottom is so pretty

My dogs go in front, behind and beside me, intermittently during a walk. Does that mean when they're in front, they're feeling extra dominant and thinking about staging a coupe? And when they lag behind, they're being submissive? What does it mean when they're beside me? OH! It must mean they're feeling like my equal. OMG!:yikes: For shame!

What about when they see a squirrel and try and walk while looking behind them, and walk into me? Or a tree... What does that mean? Is he preparing to overthrow the entire neighborhood?

I much prefer Tyr to be ahead of me...that way I can see it coming when he tries to plow me down...when he launches from behind it's hard to brace for the attack.

Also, if they're ahead of me, I can see when they're about to get into something they shouldn't be into, and I can see that they're still with me. Behind me it's way too easy for them to be elsewhere entirely.

I think a great part of the reason people buy into his bullshit is because being on NG gives him credibility in the public eye.

I've lost any respect for NG over the years, not just because of Cesar, but because I see them cranking out TV shows using outdated, discredited information. Their program on Druids was the last one that really stood out. It was based entirely on hypotheses and Roman "historian" accounts that have been long discredited.

I've never understood that 'humans must lead' garbage... How am I supposed to read their body language if I can't see it?? Both Murphy and Mick are still mildly DR but I can get them to focus on me if I see them starting to react.

Heck, I don't want Riley behind me either - the Stripey Boy would probably clothesline my knees just for fun and zoomies.

Today on our hike (off leash) I turned around and Jose` wasn't right behind me. Wha??? Where'd ya go Boo boo? Oh, he stopped to take a few bites from some coyote poop on the trail. Lovely. Ewwwww. I much prefer the two dogs to run a little ways ahead so I can see what they're up to. Usually, they are, but they switch around and I let them so they can do their thing. But I have to keep turning around to make sure they're coming.

That idea of always making them be behind you is so outlandishly ridiculous, I don't see how anyone can buy into that...anyone with half a brain. Seriously, haven't people figured out dogs a little bit...at least by now? It's been long enough for 'crisesake...what some 15,000 years? :rofl1: It's just beyond explanation.

Pepper was BESIDE me two days ago when she nailed a rib bone someone had thrown out of the car into the grass. What is it with this neighborhood and their freaking rib bones? I heard the crunch and grabbed her hooking my finger deep into her throat to remove the inch long splinter she was trying to swallow. She had it in her mouth for like the 2 seconds it took me to bend over and grab her. I still didn't know if I had it all so I had to go back to the gas station and buy a huge 2 dollar muffin which I gave her most of and came home and added another 2 slices of bread to that. It must have worked because she is fine and dandy. I prefer mine to walk beside me, it was how I was trained, and how I train. Even so, there is no safe place apparently.
She was very sneaky, didn't act like she had found anything, just dropped her head and grabbed it while walking without even breaking her stride. She knows that's a nonononono.

Yep, it's easier to see them in front. Which is why I insist on them being in front of me. Much much safer if you ask me.

It's no safer having them in front......that is, if you pull straight up on the leash, holding the dog's head high and close to your body, cutting off at least 1/2 of his air supply. That keeps him subdued and out of trouble. Don't forget: You have to be the alpha of your pack. It's people who let their dogs to be the leader, run their lives and allow them too much slack in the leash or :yikes: no leash at all who have unhappy, insecure, undisciplined dogs with no sense of pack leadership!

I'd be more than happy to allow mine to run my life. They can pay the rent, do the laundry, mow the grass and vacuum too while they're at it.
