hope I'm wrong.

Michigan, specifically the area in and around Jackson county, is having quite a run of dog related incidents lately. That usually means the public crying out, and some official thinking he can fix it with a ban :(

Link: Report: Pit bulls attack pregnant woman in Westland | detnews.com | The Detroit News

• On Aug. 24, a 6-year-old Jackson County girl was severely mauled by three pit bulls, suffering face and skull injuries in the attack. According to reports, Tyah Norris was playing with a friend in Blackman Township when she was attacked. One dog knocked her down, and then the others joined in the attack.

According to her mother, Joyce Norris, one of the little girl's tear ducts had to be replaced, part of her skull is gone and she has "stitches all over her face." The dogs were euthanized.

• On Aug. 16, Khalil Rocks, 8, was mauled by a pit bull while playing in Warren. The dog was in its yard when it reportedly broke loose from its leash and jumped a fence to attack Khalil. The dog fled after being hit with a flower pot by a neighbor.

Jenny Lin Angel, the dog's owner, later pleaded not guilty to charges of harboring a dangerous animal causing serious injury, a felony which carries a penalty of up to four years in prison.

Angel was released on a $5,000 personal bond and is due back in court on Sept. 7.

Khalil's mother, Dionna Rocks, said her son suffered injuries to his legs, shoulder and eye and is unable to walk. The mauling was the second for Khalil, who was attacked by a different pit bull when he was 3, according to his mother.

• On Aug. 14, a Warren woman shot a pit bull that attacked her dog. The woman, who had a permit for the weapon, shot the dog after it wouldn't release her Shih Tzu.

Both dogs survived.

• On July 12, a 5-year-old boy died after he was attacked by two dogs in his home in Lincoln Park. According to police, the mother of Kyle Holland found her son dead in his room after putting him to bed at about 10:30 p.m. the night before.
At least Michigan has a policy of charging owners with a felony if the dog seriously harms or kills a human OR another dog/pet (I think, I'll have to check on that to be sure) A policy I agree with.

This news report looks a bit hopeful though, the title scared me, but the content is concerning more owner responsibility......

It sounds like one being charged with a felony knew he dog was aggressive and dangerous =[

Another thing is, I wonder exactly how many of those "pit bulls" were actually pit bulls....here, people who get attacked by dogs always say it was a pit bull, and they're almost never right. Most friggin people don't even know what kind of dog they have.

I really hope they push for things like stricter leash laws, dog-bite prevention seminars in schools, etc. and not BSL.

Also...that last case sounds REALLY suspicious to me. How on Earth could a 5 year old be attacked and killed by dogs in his bedroom and the mother not hear something or notice until the next morning??! How did the dogs get in, were they family dogs???

ETA: and I like how they point out the breeds in all the pit-related death but leave the breed out in the other cases. I looked up the boy, there was a husky and a husky-shepherd mix in the house, they don't know which one (or both) caused the death.

Ya, I found that very shocking too............she 'found her son dead in his room' and nobody heard a thing? Something's rotten there and I hope they look into all the details thoroughly.

This is from the first link concerning the 5 year old:
It was determined he had been attacked by one or both of the dogs owned by the woman's live-in boyfriend. The dogs were a 35-pound Labrador mix and a 90-pound Husky/German shepherd mix.
This is from the second link concerning two of the other attacks listed in the first article:

each of the dogs at Jackson County's animal shelter have two things in common- they're stray pit bulls.

Michigan is a hot-spot for BSL already. I know of many dog owner/breeders that will NOT sell to anyone who lives in Michigan. It's that bad of a state.

I wish people would push for stricter punishments on the owners of these dogs. Like felony charges with jail time.

My friend's little boy was killed by 3 Boxers when he was just 4-yrs-old. Know what happened to the owner of those dogs (didn't help that the dog's belonged to a police officer's fiance)? Nothing.

Know what she's dealing with in addition to still reeling from the horrific death of her son? B.S.L. She owns a "pit bull". So after her son was killed, she'll have her dog taken and killed. Talk about justice.

If their is more BSL in Michigan than their might be already the only ones to blame are the bad owners and the people that fight the dogs. I'm sure in Detroit a lot of pit bull fights go on.

If you really want to stop BSL put teeth into your dangerous dog, confinement, and leash laws and then be willing to fund enforcement and live with those restrictions yourself.

I'm still waiting for the county who is willing to put owner education as a requirement to getting a license, just like a drivers license.

so deal with that and leave the non-dog-fighting responsible dog owners alone.

dangerous ownership habits are dangerous ownership habits, no matter what the breed.

BSL as absolutely NOTHING to do with "dogfighters". It has everything to do with people who refuse to put their damned dogs on a leash or chain them in their own backyards or fence them in or keep them in their own home.

It has everything to do with being a RESPONSIBLE owner. How many "dogfighters" have you heard of in the news after hearing of their dogs attacking and/or killing someone? Me? NONE. You may not like what they do and it is illegal, but dogs fighting other dogs and dogs chasing squirrels and dogs hunting hogs and dogs hunting coons...etc etc...are NOT responsible for BSL.

And it's the ignorance of not even knowing anything about BSL yet being "for it" that drives it home. Sounds good, maybe feels good especially since one doesn't own any "pit bulls" anyway, so why not go for it?

In the meantime, I'll call for BSL against Dachshunds seeing as how Carson had a dogs' teethmarks on his face for weeks (I've got the pics...I'll post them). I s'pose we need to go after all those who hunt with their dogs first. Obviously, if people wouldn't hunt badgers or ground prey with Dachshunds, they wouldn't be biting people.

That's what I propose when I speak at city council meetings. I bring up that we already have a leash law and laws to address cruelty and neglect. Those laws are not enforced so what good would making new laws be other than they "feel good" and get such area 15-minutes-of-media press.

There is no need for BSL. All BSL will do is give a false sense of security to those who do not like what they do not know about or understand (aka "pit bulls") and in the meantime the number of dog bites and dog attacks and dogs roaming loose will continue to increase.
