My cousin has a Boykin Spaniel puppy and has asked for my advice on this. I'm a little stumped so I thought I'd ask for your's. He is about six months old now, she got him when he was eight weeks old. She has managed to get him crate trained and he no longer pees in his crate but she says as soon as he's let out he pees anywhere and everywhere (even after going outside it's not excited to be getting out of the crate peeing lol) I've spent some time at her place in the past and seen him do this. I don't think it's marking since he's been doing it since he was a tiny puppy but of course I could be wrong. I've already told her to clean well with Nature's Miracle or something similar. But now that he's used to doing this what can be done to get him to stop it? I may be puppy sitting him the next week or so and while he's here I'll definitely try to help her with it lol.

Thanks in Advance,
Melissa

Always take him directly outside after leaving the crate. Then when you bring him back in keep him on leash so that he cannot start peeing (if he does you are right there to stop him and bring him back out). Since it's been allowed to happen for so long it's an ingrained habit that will take some time to break, prevention is the best way to break a habit.

Tiny breeds housebreak very quickly. Because of this they develop good or bad potty habits much faster than larger breeds. The spaniel is trained to potty in the house. You are correct that the spots need to be well cleaned. If Nature's Miracle doesn't work your cousin can use white vinegar. I would also cover each favorite area with a plastic or vinyl cover, like a tarp (she could get a cheap one and cut it up into pieces). Then, feed the dog on these places. She can use paper plates or just put the kibble on the spots. Do this for at least a month. Most dogs won't mess where they eat.

Also, she needs to take him outside and keep him out there until he is finished. This means staying out with him, immediately treat and praise when he goes outside. Play with him, go for a walk or something, until his system is empty. I had a foster who I had to leave outside in the morning for fifteen minutes, then take him for a 25 minute walk (using a 20 leash so he could run about) to work everything out.

Thanks for all the great advice. I will definitely pass it on to her and use it myself while he's staying here with me.

I never knew that they actually housebreak quicker. I just know that my parents had a much harder time housebreaking their Chihuahua than I did my Standard Poodle. Boykins aren't actually that tiny lol. They get up to 18" and 40lbs. I'm not sure how big he is at this point though.

Thanks again for the advice!

Oh, my image of them was of a little breed, must be thinking of something else. But, the suggestions in the two posts should work well just the same.

I initially thought they were smaller than that too because the only time I had been around one was a pup who was a runt and was always undersized. I didn't know until my cousin got him how big they actually get. Thanks again for your advice.
