Papillon Type Differences

Ok sooo... After surfing some older-ish threads, I heard people talking about the different types of papillons, and how neither are incorrect, they are just different styles. I was just wondering if someone could explain to me the differences in the type (with photos would be helpful) and which type they prefer.

there is also the Phalene, which in some places, is considered a different breed. you CAN get a litter with both paps and phalenes

Some breeders breed for different things.. some like FULL fluffy coats, some a bit less, different heads.. that kind of thing. but laur would be able to tell you more about that

I am aware of the phalene, what I am wanting information on is the differences in type of papillons. In the thread it was discussed in (I wish I could remember!) I think there was mention of one type being a little stockier, more box-like, if you will. Actually, if I remember correctly, it was Laur and someone else. The person was saying she preferred the 'look' of her last pap over the one of her current one, and Laur was saying that she preferred the look of the current one... I feel like I am not making sense lol.

Kind of like prick-eared border collies and semi-pricked ears... Both are acceptable, they are just different types.

Yes I was looking for more info on coat and build and shape of heads, etc.

I guess I am curious if there are obvious types or if they are just tiny differences with each breeder and what they are and stuff

"Breed type" is just a saying. It means basically, how papillon is your papillon?

Could you take it's head and shave it and put it on a chihuahua and it still look like a pap? If it would, that dog has good breed type.

It's the same as when people post a pic and ay "what kind of dog is this mixed with." People reply with remarks like, oh his tail looks very beagle-y, or it has a pittie-type face.

Different breeders breed for a type that they like.

I'm not sure what type my papillon is, she is not too active and doesn't bark too mush

In paps there's not too too much of a difference in type. I think unless you were really into showing you'd not really notice the subtleties.

Generally though the British lines tend to be stockier and bulkier a bit, bigger, rounder head, more coat. American lines are the lankiest and probably have the least amount of set type. They're also known for the least ear fringe and coat. Japanese and Finnish/Swedish types are usually about the same. Most fringe, good coat, most refined face. Some are a bit (or a lot) short in the leg though imo.

I like the American 'style' dogs personally, and PD tends to go for British dogs. Most of the old US lines though have been crossed with imports to 'improve type'

Even with slight type differences we import and export dogs a lot and they do well in other countries.

Here's some champions I've found that kind of illustrate the variety found within the breed. All these dogs are champions in at least one country.

This is one of my favorite dogs (also happens to be Mia's uncle lol)

I think I prefer the slightly leggier ones, with a little less coat, which I am assuming are US lines. My favorites are 1,2,4 and number 4 on post 2

I like smaller with lots of silky coat!

A lot of those are american line bitches. Bitches tend to have less coat than males no matter the lines.

I like coat but not going all the way to the ground. Beau and Rose have a ton of coat. Nard and Mia are more my ideal, it's less thick and more shaped to their bodies. Summer's coat is kind of wild.. thick, short and wavy in every which way.
