Now my dog eats and wags his tail when we get home.......but not much else. Just lays in the hall by himself. Doesn't want to play. It has been suggested that we get another dog so he will have a companion.....but I am just not currently up to doing that. I guess dog owners will understand why...... Any thoughts or suggestions?

Has he been check out by a vet?

How old is he? First thing that came to mind was joint problems/pain.

How long has he been like this? What do you do to try to get him to play? What were his previous favorite things to do?

I think you should work to figure out what, if anything, is the problem before getting another dog. And of course, if you get another dog it should be because YOU want one, I'm not a big fan of getting your pet a pet.

If he's young and crated he may not know how to play . I would say to concentrate on him and not bring in a " playmate " at this point , we need more info !

How old is the dog? Has he always been like this? Does he enjoy going for a walk? Have you had him checked out to make sure it's not a joint problem? How long have you had him? Did you get him as a puppy, adopt him later in life, or what?

I think your dog needs a mate. get it to a local pet shop and breed it. he will be ok and all thing gone fine.

Um, I think you might need to clarify this a bit better, LOL

Maybe something has been lost in the translation?

I am real tired of this stuff..spam/troll. I think Emma and the organic food need to go bye bye. Edit..done

My first thought was vet check. If a dog slows down and acts inappropriately to their age it's a big red flag. Even Mary (lab) at 16 galloped her old arthritic body across a field with her tail wagging. HEr son however at 7 watched her chase after a ball. I should have known right then that something was wrong and I missed it. I didn't know he was growing lung cancer.
My second is lack of stimulation.
IF the vet check is clear, start with a short walk. THen slowly increase the distance, the terrian. SHow this dog there is a world out there and that living is good. SOme dogs never are much for play. SOme dogs like a companion some don't. I think a lot of dogs just fall into a routine.

Now I wish today mine would just eat and go lay down. Instead it's pleading eyes..and nods of heads..hint hint the door the door....I showed them too much of the world and now it's winter and too cold for me but not for them. Good luck. I hope you find a happy balance.

Is this a new behavior? What do you do to try to engage him in activities? How old is he? How long have you had him? What's his history?

Copy that. It is really getting tiresome! Grrrr.

I agree with the others with very sensible posts.
