Hey guys I need some help. My SO's family put their sheltie down in september and they are thinking about getting another dog. And me being the dog person in the family I wanted to help them out with suggestions. I know they do not want another Sheltie. They hated dealing with the shedding and barking! They have a younger daughter who is 9 who is very good with dogs. She is constantly doting on Teags. The do alot of camping during the summer as well. I know they want a dog about the same size as a sheltie or smaller. They also live on 10 acres of land so the dog will have lots of room to run and play. The family is also outside alot of the time. And Teags will be there alot of the time playing with the dog. The father does not work so I am thinking a puppy or an older puppy might be ok if they are willing to put enough effort into training ect ect..

Thanks for your help guys.:)

a spaneil might be a good choice (assuming from a GOOD breeder) cockers are great family dogs, happy go lucky and sweet natured (again assuming good breeder)
unfortunatly cockers have a bad rap due to byb's...
there not known for their smarts, however they are very eager to please and like to learn.
there not huge shedders, least compared to shelties lol, medium size, good activity level.
but im a bit biased, i was raised with a cocker, my sister learnt to walk using our cocker as a grabbing post, and our current cocker is such a mushy dog!

I like Foxy's suggestions of the spaniel family. Maybe a Cavalier? Those seem like such great little dogs but with a sporty edge to them and great fun to train

I agree with the spaniel, they can make great family pets :) The only thing I'd be worried about is grooming.
I was also thinking beagles are good with kids, like to be with their families, and like to be outdoors.

How much grooming would they be willing to do? If they're worried about shedding most of the breeds that don't shed much can be pretty high maintenance in the grooming department. If they aren't opposed to it I'd say a Miniature Poodle might be a good fit.

As I suggested in another thread there is a breed selector that you could use. Answer the questions and it will give you a list of breeds. Along with the list there are corresponding pictures and you can see what the breed is all about from that location also.

Animal Planet :: Guides :: Dog Breed Selector

It would be interesting to see what it suggests.

I know with their Sheltie they did not groom her too aften, maybe a good brushing every week or so. They have no problem with taking it to the groomer though.

I was going to suggest a mini poodle (someone beat me to it).... they can be kept in a short clip that doesnt require too much work.

Also, you said sheltie size or smaller, but is their a minimum size they are thinking as well? I was thinking a pap might be a good choice for them as well... because they are portable enough for them to take camping and traveling in the summer but active enough that they would enjoy the space to run and play.

From the list you got, a Brittany would probably be a good choice as well.

If they dont really care about breed too much and want something slightly older then a puppy they could try looking around on petfinder and see if anyone jumps out at them!

Good Luck

well the suggestions I got were Pembroke Welsh Corgi, Cardigan welsh corgi, ACD, AS, Belgian Tervuren, Brittany, English Cocker Spaniel, and Field Spaniel.
These are bigger than a Sheltie, though...

My thought was a Beagle, too, but Beagles are major scent dogs, so it might be hard to train a reliable recall if they do alot of off leash stuff.

Yah I was thinking on suggesting a Pap to them or poodle. I think what they should probaly do is either look on petfinder or Kijiji and find an older dog that needs a new home for whatever reason.

Pap was my first thought. They're in many ways similar to shelties in that if you like one, you will likely like the other (high energy, sensitive, smart, etc). Only I find paps to be less barky, less grooming intensive and less prone to shyness and timidity problems. They're a great breed.

A lot of the other smaller spaniel breeds could work too.

I know they loved their Sheltie. But I dont think they like how shy she was. I knew that dog for over 5 years and I was over at their house almost everyday and still that dog would never come up to me and would run away from me like I was trying to catch her. I believe they need a dog that is more "fun". Lady really did not do much of anything!

I had a sheltie very much like this and can understand why it would put them off the breed but most shelties aren't this way. My others were very fun little dogs and were fine with strange people.

The barking and shedding though are just sheltie things, lol.

I think a pap, especially a bigger one, would be a good option.
