Convertable car seat or Infant Car Seat

What do you prefer and why? I had a infant with bev and she out grew it fast now we are trying to decide what to get for this baby and are contemplating both. So I come to you guys. Which do you think is best and why?

Both my neice and nephew have the ones that they could use as babies.. then turned around when they were at the proper weight/age.

I would get an infant seat with the stroller it fits in and then get a convertible when the baby outgrows the infant seat.

We are about to buy Mason a convertible as he is almost too long for his infant one.

But I have really loved having the infant seat that fits in his stroller. He can fall asleep in the car, we just slip his seat into the stroller and he can sleep while we shop or whatever.

I do hate carrying and dealing with putting the infant seat in and out, but it is worth it to not have to get the baby out of the car seat to go shopping if he falls asleep in the car.

We arent getting the stroller to come with it because one i HATE those strollers and two my umbrella can hold one. But that was my thinking. At the same time I HATED the carseat and took her out of it anyway.

Mer thats why I want one of those but I have seen reviews that you shouldnt put a newborn in one so IDK didnt have the issue with bev I got the infant seat and stroller for my baby shower with bev LOL.

I had the infant car seat and am glad that I did when she was little. It made going to the store and other places much easier, unless you plan to always wear them. There were times though that I just wanted her to be in her seat, like when we would go out to eat, or go to the Dr's office or something. Plus, when I would be gone from the house all day, it was nice to have a place to put her if she needed to sleep that was safe. By 8 months when Devin was sitting on her own for a few months and getting too heavy to carry in the infant car seat, we moved her to a convertible one. Sorry, I am not much help. If I had to do it all over again from scratch, I would probably still get an infant car seat again. The Graco Snugride had the best safety ratings when I bought ours and wasn't very expensive compared to others. We avoided the combination packages, and opted for a stroller frame which I bet you could buy used for really cheap. I LOVED mine and am glad I didn't spend a lot on it and got a nice stroller later when I knew what I wanted.

ETA: I really liked the stroller frame. It was very light weight, moved around nicely and didn't take up a ton of room in my car. I know you could find a used one inexpensively somewhere.

We have an infant car seat. Mason was a BIG baby, but still fit into the smallest setting. If convertible saves you money in the long run, and is still safe, I say why not.

The advantage of convertible seats is that you'll probably need one down the road anyway... I know some people who never bothered with the infant seat, but you have to do your research to make sure that the seat reclines enough for a newborn.

Personally I think the infant seats were great in the first few months... I can't imagine having to take the baby out all the time when you go out, and so many strollers don't work out until they can sit up anyway... so you'd probably have to get a stroller the baby can lie in if you don't have one. Now don't get me wrong once they got bigger I hated the thing and we switched to convertible seats at 7 months (they could have stayed in the infant seats until 15 months but I hated lugging the things), but yeah, for the first few months it was worth it.

If money is the main issue I'd check ebay or heck, freecycle. Kids outgrow them so fast that most second hand infant seats are still in awesome shape.

The infant seat/carrier that I had for Carson (and still have) holds an infant up to 30 lbs and 32 inches long. They do make a lot of these now compared to the older ones that held up to 22 lbs and babies of shorter length.

I prefer the infant carrier until baby can sit up on their own because it makes it easier to grab-n-go, especially when you have another youngster or two! Trying to juggle a newborn in one arm along with purse and diaper bag and deal with another toddler is a disaster...for me anyway.

I didn't switch Carson over into convertible until he was a year old. I had to switch Cole, who had the smaller lb/length infant carrier, when he was about 5 months old.

If you really want to do the convertible from the get-go, I'd suggest investing in one of great quality. We don't have a lot of extra money, but I have the Britax Fronteir for Cole and just bought the Britax Boulevard for Carson. The Boulevard is far and above a more comfortable, easier to use carseat than the much cheaper Evenflo I have.

Our infant seat goes up to 30 pounds, 32 inches also, but now it's just in my husband's car and the convertible is in my car. I stopped taking the infant seat out long ago anyway because it was just too heavy and he wouldn't stay sleeping in public anyway. It was nice when he was a little baby and did sleep in restaurants, though

If you want an infant seat and base, I could send you one. I bought it new and only used it for maybe 2 months, as we were given one I liked better later. It is a jungle theme, gender neutral. There is nothing wrong with it, never been in an accident or anything. Since we already have another infant seat and a convertible seat, we have no use for this one. Even if we have another baby later, it won't be for about 5 years so it would be expired
Then you guys can just worry about getting a nicer convertible seat for later

Its not the money part it was more baby size. bev with 2 tiny parents was huge. lol. jeremy is alot bigger then sperm donor. i just dont want to spend a hundred dollars on a car seat then 3 mths later buying a convertable. ive already decided on another baby trend for a infant seat if we do that.

I wouldn't be too worried about size. Mason is a big baby. He will be 6 months tomorrow and still fits in his infant seat. His feet are getting a little close to the edge, but at 4 months he was in the 75th percentile.

I just can't imagine having to take an infant in and out of the car seat every time you go somewhere. Especially when you go eat or something.

I am actually not looking forward to the convertible car seat, because even though Mason is getting big enough to sit in high chairs and buggies, during the middle of winter and flu season I much prefer him to be all protected in his infant seat where I can easily flip down the visor thing to keep people from getting too close to him.

Oh and when is your due date? You need a new ticker!

I'd definitely go with the infant seat and then go to the converter seat later. we had an infant seat for the first year with hannah and I know so many people that bought a convertable car seat for their new born and HATED it. I don't think they offer enough support for a new born... the infant seats are designed for infants where as the convertable ones aren't. they are designed to fit all ages up to like 3 or whatever size they would be when they reach the limit

also... you don't HAVE to always take the infant carrier out of the car just because the baby is in it. just loosen the straps (there should be a lever somewhere for that) and undo it just as you would with a convertable one. you don't HAVE to lug it anywhere. We stopped taking hannah out of the car in the carrier when she could sit up in the stroller and it wasn't overly difficult to take her in and out of the infant carrier

If we had to take Mason out everywhere we went and carry him, that'd be very annoying. He's too young to go in our front carrier yet, and he hates the sling, so infant carseat it is.

I love my big stroller. I hate umbrella strollers. No cup holders, no storage basket, she cant lie down if she gets sleepy and it looks uncomfortable. Mine is not inconvenient at all, it opens and closes so easily. Plus you cant put a newborn in an umbrella stroller but if you baby-wear that wont be an issue. Chloe couldnt be put in either stroller without the infant carseat attached until she was about 5 mos and couldnt sit in an umbrella until she was about six months. I cant imagine having to get the baby in and out of a convertible carseat every time you get out of the car but we probably did more running around than a lot of people.

If you think you wont need an infant carseat then save the money but if you dont plan on wearing the baby every time you go out I would keep in mind that you wont be able to put the baby in the umbrella stroller for a few months so you would have to carry him/her everywhere.

Yeah we didnt always get the carseat out. I cant believe it when I see people lugging six month olds around in carriers. Its so much more difficult than just carrying the baby.

That looks like the one I am planning to get but a different color, and at Walmart it is $100 cheaper. I wonder if there is much of a difference.

I dont know my due date exactly yet. im only 7 weeks at most and trying to find a dr i like. my stroller goes newborn to 5 or so. its a fancy umbrella. it lays down has a basket. i had to use a system stroller and i almost threw it under the disney train. we have decided to get a infant seat.
