What do you do about your dog's marking behavior when on a walk?

Maorit of our walks are in the oods. so where ever he pleases.

In th nigboorhood. Our walks are him running alongsid me on my bike. So he doesnt get a cance to mar. I do make 3 stops on the bike ride fr himto mrk. at the top of our street onthe light post. A bunch of bushs on the path, andanoter light post on our way. Thats it. Or else h would want to stop ever 2 secnds lol. No way. I only stop for him to poop. Which is dangerous as he just drops his butt down and almost knocks us both over with his weight crashing down lol

Dan, a little off topic (sorry to the OP) but what are the rules concerning marking for protection work? In agility if our dogs mark/pee/poop going into the ring or in the ring at any point we are asked to leave and recieve a bit ol E.

I'm not sure what the rules are as we don't do it for sport. I imagine it depends on the sport, but I've heard of dogs so dominant in things like KNPV that the dogs will actually pee on the decoys when they have them down on the ground. Gunnar never marked on the field while training, but he'd be sure to hit the gate post on the way in and the way out.

Truffles is very big on marking. I live out in the country, so anything is game. Mostly shrubs, grass, trees, the old tractor, and I don't care if he marks our car tires. Though I wouldn't let him mark anyone elses. He's always on leash, so its not a problem. He marks even when he is out of pee. This bugs me a lot, because I have to stop and stand there or drag him along. If I give the leash a tug or say "come on", he will resist until he's done spraying his imaginary pee. Every 5 steps, he's gotta mark. Its insane. I remember once I put lilianas carrier down and a scottish terrier attempted to lift his leg on it. I can't stand it when dogs will mark peoples possesions and owners who don't care. Truffles has never done that.

For Schutzhund and SDA you will be DQed if your dog eliminates on the field.

I try not to let Pit mark. I'll tell him to pee at the beginning and end of our walks and that's it. I just hate the feeling of having a dog that feels the need to go around marking when taken to new as well as routine places. This stems mostly from working at a dog daycare back in the day where you had to watch certain dogs like a hawk when they came in in the morning because they would zip around marking if we didn't stop them. Some of the owners would let their dogs pee on our cars when they walked in. Drove me insane.

Good grief, we were setting up everything for jrt fun day a few years ago at a local event. I watched as one of our exhibitors watched her dog as he ran over (off leash) and pee'd on stuff laying on the ground from one of the vendors (they were unloading and setting up as well). Needless to say the vendor was very upset and the woman with the dog couldn't understand why everyone was so annoyed with her and her dog. I warned her that if it happened again, she would be asked to leave and she should be thankful that I didn't ask her to leave at that moment. Stupid woman....

Bimmer's very deliberate with his marking and he mostly runs around the yard off leash on his own, anyway.

Kharma . . . Kharma mostly marks when another dog is barking at her or confronting her. She's been known to mark the dog, or even turn her back and leave a dump in their faces, lol. I don't say a word when that happens :rofl1:

Rocket's allowed to mark anything outside that is on our property. If it's not our property, we don't mark it - like people's bushes, trash cans, etc. He can mark trees that aren't in people's yards, fire hydrants, sign posts. We NEVER mark indoors

My dogs are not allowed to mark on anything that is handled by people or where people have to step across the river of pee (granted it's not a big river considering the size of my dogs......).
