We've finally gotten lucky! A UKC weight pull an hour away allowing me to do equipment/pull familiarization to see if this is something the girls want to do. And for the first time in a long time ... I get to take both girls to a fun event because they aren't in heat!! They always seem to cycle when there's something I want to do. The law of averages has finally weighed in our favor! :D

I really hope to have pics, but I may be relying on my mother to help with the photography, and she really has a special skill for NOT getting the shot. Most of my agility runs were of the empty jump or maybe the dog's tail on a good day. :(

Yay! I wouldn't think "collie" when I think of weight pulling, but I love it when dogs work "outside the box." Sounds like fun!! Will be waiting for pictures!!!

Usually, no you wouldn't, but my girls are well-muscled and have high drive. Not your typical Collies ... ;)

Well, we had a great time! Both girls stepped right into the harnesses and pulled with no hesitation. Considering we were at a Pit Bull event, it was nice we could show that we could 'tow the line'. Several Pitties were afraid and wouldn't pull, and it was funny to hear some of the people say "****! Those Collies are pulling better than the Pits!" lol

I didn't get many pics. Basically they started out just pulling the cart on the rails, then slowly add weight in 100# increments. Dora got to 400 lbs and then started getting bored with the idea, so we stopped there. Smidgen pulled 500 lbs and that seemed to be her limit today, even though she would have tried more. (For their weight class, they'll need to pull 600 lbs).

Not too bad for dogs with no pulling training or conditioning. I'm confident once I get Smidgen conditioned she'll be ready for competition. She really had a great time and got excited when it was her turn to get harnessed up (they had to share a borrowed harness between the two girls).

Smidgen - 200 lbs

We ended up going to a ABDA Pit Bull Fun Day, which was next to the UKC pull. At the UKC trial pull, there were several Toy Fox Terriers, Patterdale Terriers, and I think even a Dachshund. :)

Heheh . . . everyone laughs at the way I pull Kharma. You know how you see all the calling and loud encouragement?

She gets harnessed up, I turn around and start walking away, look back and say, "I'm going, you coming with me?" She comes with me :rofl1:

It's great conditioning for the dogs, and good socializing, too.

I wonder what Ollie would do !!!
Unless he has the drive to want to pull, he would probably just sit down. :D Several of the Pitties balked when the cart moved behind them because they didn't know what was 'chasing' them. I saw a few others that just didn't see the point and when the felt the resistance on the harness, they calmly sat down.

There have been some new clubs started, so there are now trials throughout central Florida and more planned in the future. There's still hope!

Wow! Your girls did a great job!

how much do the small dogs ussually pull? I think keely would be good at it. She pulls her own sled in the winter varying in weight, depends on the mood she is in :p

There are weight classes and the pull weight is determined by that. I don't know for the little ones, but nothing near what the larger ones pull.

Dora - 200 lbs

she looks like she's out on a stroll around the neighborhood! :lol-sign:
The picture does look a little like that, but if you look closer, she's pacing and clenching her teeth, which is because she's putting effort into it ... she pulled like a 'normal' dog after that. It was just the only pic I had of her.

If she were strolling, she'd look like this ... single tracking and not clenching her teeth ;)
