For some odd reason, I've been coming across chihuahuas that look very pom like. The head is the give-away. That dog is a chihuahua. I come across some chis that have such FULL and FLUFFY coats that I SWEAR there must be pom somewhere in there.
When I think of long coat chihuahua I see this...

I dont know, I love seeing a nice coat on a longcoat chihuahua, but I think some breeders are just getting carried away. I want a chihuahua to look like a chihuahua. Not a chihuahua that looks like a Pomeranian.

I agree, Dogsarebetter, this one looks a lot like many poms that come in my shop. Not well breed ones, but the byb ones.
This is listed as a pom, as an example.

If that's a long coated chi, then their must have been some pom mixed in there some how in the past.

yeah, if you google search poms, about 80% of those look nothing like poms I have ever seen.
they all look like that pic you posted, and the pic the op posted. at most of the dogs we do come from one of the three huge amish puppy mills around here. so I know its horrible breeding that is causing them to look like that. Also, these poms are usually under 8 lbs.

id personally say a badly bred pomeranian....
(despite being listed as a chihuahua...)
why:
well if hes a chi, hes very out of standard, the coat is too thick for one...
a long haired chihuahuas is SUPPOSED to have a good ruff (think mane like a lion) a plumed tail, and pants (long haire on the backs of both front and back legs) the reast of the coat on the body should be long and silky and lay fairly close to the skin.
that little guy has way too much POOF to be a "pure" chihuahua.
the ears are also too small and erect, there much too compact for the size of the dogs head. Chihuahuas have large ears and those large ears do not sit atop the head like this fluffy guys ears do, a chihuahaus ears are actually situated low on the sides of the head leaving that nice wide dome ontop.
his muzzle also looks too wide, a good wowies muzzle almost looks like it was an aftertought, lol, tiny, narrow and from the front, very distinct (look at the 3 wowies in the AKC image posted) the dog posted however the muzzle seems to blend into the face giving it a wider look which would not be a good hting on a chihuahua whos supposed to essentially have a button nose.
id also say the front feet are too compact, chihuahuas are supposed to have long toes and a hare foot.
that being said, he coudl certainly pass as a chihuahua AND
its becomming more popular now to mix pom with chihuahua to get a "long haired chihuahua (and there being sold as such by some unscrupulous people), because people want smaller and fluffier dogs, and a typical long haired wowie takes 3 years for full coat.
adding pom to the mix gives puppies a much fuller coat alot quicker, while keeping the smaller size.
or theres the people out there that want smaller pomeranians with a little less/silkier coat...add some long haired wowie and tada, thats pretty much what you get.
add to that that in the ring often times the fluffiest dog wins in many smaller shows and you have a good reason why some are adding some "fluff" to their lines.
personally id say what your looking at there would be a chihuahua with pomeranina in the lines. or a badly bred pom.... (whether or not the dogs owner/breeder would tell you so...)
as a side note, it is VERY easy to get puppies of a mixed mating registered as pure even through the AKC is you have acess to a a purebred reg dogs number...
i knew one woman (reported to akc btw) who had a pure bred bichon, a pure bred poodle and her mother had a pure bred poodle (all full AKC reg)
the bichon got the poodle pregnant, they however told AKC that her mothers male poodle was the father and tada, pure bred poodles...
its unfortunatly not uncommon.
i will add that that dog is definatly neither a well bred chihuaha or a well bred pomeraninan though...

i DEFINATLY see what squishy is saying though, definatly looks like many of the not so well bred wowies in the world and i wouldnt be suprised if he/she is being advertised as such.
