Do any of you feed ur dogs Ol' Roy dog food from Wal-Mart? Do you think its a good brand?

First off, I and most members here will appreciate you asking for the health of your dog Second, no, it is not a good brand and honestly no truly good for your dog's health brand of food can be found at wal-mart. A lot of members here strive to feed their dogs a food that gets closest to what they would have had as wolves in the wild. For most, that entails a high protein, grain-free diet. Some here also feed a RAW diet which is exactly what it sounds like, raw meats, organs and bones. There are a lot of great websites to help you figure out what dry or wet food would be best for your dog's specific needs.

If you're curious, I feed my dog Izzy Taste of the Wild: Pacific Stream formula.

No Ole Roy is not considered a good dog food. I think their "best" quality food that they make is the Skin and Coat formula:

INGREDIENTS:
Lamb meal, brewers rice, soybean meal, ground yellow corn, ground wheat, wheat flour, animal fat preserved with mixed-tocopherols, corn germ meal, corn gluten meal, animal digest, calcium carbonate, salt, potassium chloride, L-lysine monohydrochloride, calcium phosphate, choline chloride, added color (yellow 5, red 40, blue 2) vitamin E supplement, zinc sulfate, ferrous sulfate, manganese sulfate, niacin, vitamin A supplement, brewers dried yeast, copper sulfate, calcium pantothenate, garlic oil, pyridoxine hydrochloride, vitamin b-12 supplement, thiamine mononitrate, vitamin D-3 supplement, riboflavin supplement, calcium iodate, menadione sodium bisulfite complex, folic acid, biotin , sodium selenite.


Those are the ingredients - I'll let someone else tear it apart, it's late here.

#1:Menadione Sodium Bisulfite Complex is banned for human consumption and is a controversial ingredient linked to cancer.

Lamb meal is the only actual good ingrediant. Although its the first one, it is Followed by 6 CRAP ingrediants.. The rice wouldnt be so bad IF there were other good ingrediants to go along wth it.

3 different uses for corn.. Makes me want to throw up. Avoid any food that uses corn n the ingrediants.. ESPECIALLY in the top 10! Corn is one of the leading causes of allergies in dogs. And I *think* its hard for them to digest.

Stay away from the lower quality foods.. Anything you can buy in walmart or a grocery store is pretty well, Crap..

If you want something in the same price range as Ole Roy, you could try Kirkland's dog food, it's pretty decent considering the price. I just bought another bag of the chicken & rice last night and it was $23. My dogs love the stuff.

BabyMomma's right, I was just too lazy to tear apart the only food they make that has ANY meat in it. Corn doesn't really digest well in any animal, cows and horses don't process it well, which is evident if you've ever stepped in a cow-pie so if it's not digesting and it's coming out the other end in the same shape it went in, it's probably NOT very nutritious.

ol'roy is a joke to me. I nic-named it kil'roy. Wayne calls it o'boy.

I would go with wellness or Orijen etc.. Check out the dog food analysis site I suggested.. Look in the 5 star category!

Grain free food is best.

Again, foods like Diamond Naturals and Kirkland are cheaper than Iams and SD...and have a lot better ingredients to them. They might not be top of the line, but they are a hell of a lot better than Iam's and Science Diet crap. Just look on the label, if corn is on there, pick another food.

Tractor Supply carries Diamond Naturals, and Costco carries the Kirkland (which is made by Diamond). TS carries Taste of the Wild as well, which is another higher quality food.

That's not much better than the Ol'Roy and you're paying a premium price for it. Don't be fooled by slick advertising. As a rule, there is virtually NOTHING you can get at a Walmart or your chain grocery that's going to be a decent dogfood.

Diamond Naturals has really good ingrediants, in large 40lb bags reasonable priced. All of ours are on it, and for us it has been great. Except for Aussie, hes a five month old Australian Shepherd and hes on Chicken Soup for puppies.

What animal people? It gets on the shelves due to marketing...think about where you've heard of Purina, Iams, etc...on TV. Most places like humane societies endorse it because the companies give them some sort of incentive...such as donating to their cause, I know that was the case in one of the local shelters back home, they endorsed Pedigree because Pedigree gave them take home sample packs and donated food to them.

Also, if you're thinking any given brand that your Vet recommends must be good, that's incorrect as well. Vets are as bad as everyone else, they get money for referring customers to Science Diet and the like. Since most Vets are NOT trained in pet nutrition so they will recommend the brand with the highest offer. As much as we'd like to think Vets are the best authority on dogs and only want the best for them, this is usually not the case when it comes to food.

Just think of it this way...McDonald's has a lot of commercials and a lot of people eat there too, but that doesn't mean it's GOOD for you.

Unfortunately, because most people look at price and they look at advertising... without reading the ingredients. That includes their own food, not just their dogs. Why would grocery store people put twinkies on the shelves?

The difference is that YOU can buy YOURSELF a twinkie, and that is your own choice. But when YOU buy terrible, grain-laiden food for your dog... they have no other choice.

Do not feed your dog with foods from manufacturing companies.They contain euthanasia that reduces the lifespan of your dog.Go for raw, dry or home made foods.
Take care
