I thought this would be a nice educational thread. I heard someone refer to a teckel a while back and had to look it up to realize they meant dachshund. So I thought we could share other breed names just in case I come across the more uncommon (for the USA at least) names for your breed.

For Papillons we have:

Papillon (erect eared)
Phalene (drop eared)
Continental Toy Spaniel (Actually the most common name for the breed worldwide as it's what is used by the FCI)
Epagneul Nain Continental/ENC
Squirrel Dog
Butterfly Dog

Those are the two most common, though if you dig into the history, they were also called "ghost-dogs" "blue bob-tails" and if you go over to Wales, they will swear up and down that Aussies are Old Welsh Sheepdogs.

I believe squirrel dog is a bit outdated but all the others are still used nowadays just depending where you are in the world.

The bichon frise (my moms dog)

is also called the Bichon à poil frisé

Chihuahuas can be called:

Long coat/long haired chihuahuas
Short coat/short haired/smooth coat chihuahuas
Chis

Chihuahuas meeting the breed standard are commonly called "apple heads."
Chihuahuas outside of the breed standard are referred to as "deer heads."

That is really interesting. I am new to Aussies, and I never knew that. Where did the "ghost-dogs" name come from? Thats pretty cool.

Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever is most commonly referred to as:

Toller
Duck Toller

But many people used to refer to them as (and maybe still do in Nova Scotia):

Little River Duck Dog
Yarmouth Toller
Tolling Retriever

Shelties are pretty much shelties, but they used to be Toonie dogs and (my personal fave) Shetland Collies. I actually really wish they were still called Shetland Collies. *sniffle*

All correct OVCHARKA dog is incorrect since that means shepherd dog and without the name Caucasian or Central Asian in front of it - it is misnomer often used.

My own pen Smooch Monsters or dog of the nomads.
For my cough competition since I dont breed for Russian CAO type they call my dog Buffalo Shepherds even thou I live in Niagara not Buffalo.:)

It seems to have started when settlers were traveling with their blue-eyed Aussies. Legend has it that the tribes wouldn't bother settlers if they had a blue-eyed Aussie, thinking they were traveling with a special protector. The natives referred to those Aussies as "ghost-dogs".

For the longest time I almost always call Yorkies "Shire/s."

West Highland White Terriër/Terrier/Terror
Westie

Then the generic Little White Dogs, have heard a few people refer them as Christmas dogs but that's nonsense to me.

Blah! I rebel against that ;):p Do you know how many times at a show no less someone makes a Cesar comment? I say look in a catalog and get back to me, unless they actually ask what breed they are.
