Hi,

I was in France last week and I saw the cutest puppy on the street. I asked the owner what type of dog it was and he said something like kethiel / cathiel/ kettle or ketheal (it was in a French accent!) It was a small puppy with short legs. He had big floppy ears, short hair which was almost black and pale brown around its paws and it had a short tail. I have fallen in love with this dog and I want to get one but I cannot find the breed anywhere, would you have any suggestions to what type of dog it could be or where I could look?

Thanks
Ali

By short tail do you mean it was docked (cut short)? I mean it sounds like some type of hound due to it's short legs and floppy ears but if it's docked and black and tan it could have been a rottie, not that the name sounds anything like what you described. It'd really hard to tell.

Short legs and floppy ears... all I can think of are dachshunds and drevers. Neither are docked though.

I don't think it's "mutt", I found out how to say THAT is French (although there are probably other ways too): Clébard
I do agree it *sounds* like they were saying cattle, which would lead me to believe cattle dog, but that doesn't fit the description really.

The only other word I can come up with that she could've mis-heard is teckel. But that's just a dachshund. Fits the short legged, drop eared, black and tan smooth coated description but I've never heard of a dachshund being docked.

May not have been for cosmetic reasons.. A local dog got hit by a car and lost his tail.. May have had some sort of disease or something.. Migt have came from a BYB and was mixed with a breed with a docked tail so they docked the tails without knowing what the dogs would look like..

Could've been anything.
