I was at the beach and while walking to the beach stumbled upon a car with 3 dead dogs in it :( 2 chihuahuas and 1 lab. it was over 100 degrees today , the car was parked in the sun and the windows were shut.

the guy who owned the shop in front of which the car was parked broke one of the windows to see if we could save the dogs but.. it was too late. the car had been parked there for over an hour and he didn't see the dogs inside.

the owner arrived around the same time animal control arrived.. he cried and was sad.. but its common knowledge in this city to NEVER leave your dog in the car, the city is very dog friendly so you can take them everywhere but its WAY to hot to leave them in the car for ANY period of them.

he said that when he left the dogs, the storefront shaded the car.. but when i arrived, the car was 100% in the heat.

THose poor dogs :( they were healthy dogs that didn't deserve a miserably death like that

and the owner even asked the shop owner to pay for the window that he broke! but the animal control people told him to shut up, he got fined for neglect for each dog..

awee poor doggies!! :( Must of been horrible to come across. I don't buy the guys story for one second though... about it being fully shaded when he left. Like even if it was, and if he truly was upset about it... why would he leave all the windows rolled up? You'd think that if he thought they'd be fine in the shade... he would have at the very least cracked the windows.

maybe you & the shop owner should sue him for mental anguish for trying to save his dogs w/o success. that would hurt a lot more than the neglect fine and really teach the prick more of a lesson. although the kind of lesson he really needs is to be locked in a dry sauna until he passes out.

its a sight I will never forget. those poor dogs, If I had only been there an hour or 2 earlier.. I wouldve broken the window and gotten them out myself! ugh I wish we had gotten an earlier start!

Ugh, I'm so sorry you had to see that. ((((hugs))))

I know how you feel, I was going to the tennis courts Monday, and they had a basketball thing set up in the middle of the court, so I walked over to move it. . .and right beside it was a little dead black kitten. Couldn't have been dead more than a few hours. :(

THE only dog i ever saw die in a truck took the dash, the seats, the everything. You couldn't even see in the windows for the saliva and the blood. I had nighmares from this. Heat stroke i can say from personal experience is VERY painful. It starts with intense stomach cramping that folded me in half and things got worse from there. WHich is why i walked around city market writing down license numbers of cars even with the windows cracked. People do not realize that does NOT let cool air in..the hot air is working to hard pushing out and there is always more where it came from. THe office would announce it over the loud speaker for people to go get their dogs before authorities were called.

I can't believe the guy asked the store owner to pay for the windows. I am just unfathomable. How horrible..poor poor dogs.

How tragic !!! I never leave Ollie very long ....but all 5 windows are opened enough for him to put his head out and the skylight open for rising heat . My rule of thumb is if I'd be comfortable ...he's OK .

OH.MY.GAWD.

That is.. TERRIBLE..

Grammy, Ive seen people with metalgrate things in there windows so they can put the back windows down all the way and the air can blow thru that I would be comfortable, so i assume the dogs are..

Im going to try and find some.

That's tragic... I'll sometimes leave a dog in a car if it's in the shade and the windows are open (not cracked).. but I'm in Vancouver, BC ... I can't imagine what's going through someone's head when they do that in FLORIDA (!!!!!), let alone with the windows up (?!?!?) and long enough for the sun to move.

Idiots are everywhere.

ETA and what a POS for asking for the store owner to pay for the window.

A fine??? That's all?!?!! Ugh...

Fran, I'm so sorry. It's a tragedy that I hope to never see in person. If I ever get a chi, I hope I can avoid getting one from him. At 100 degrees, even in the shade - especially with the windows up - those dogs still would've been in huge trouble. It might have bought some more time, but I've seen dogs heat stroke even outdoors, at night, with water. Humidity was high and the dog didn't die, but did have seizures from it.

Seriously, a FINE? That guy should have the dogs removed from his home and not be allowed to have pets ever again.

That's awful :(

Oh Fran. How horrible for you and the dogs. ((((HUGS)))).

And you did a good thing, trying to help. For whatever consolation that is.

So sad :(

I wouldn't even leave Bodhi in the car here in the summer, and our summers SUCK really. I feel bad enough whenever I've dashed into a shop which is rare.

IF i were a judge...part of his punishment would be to sit in a car in the sun with the windows up for at least the first part until the panic sets in. LEt it be up to people outside of the car to decide when he gets out. LEt him sweat it literally. IF he was worried about his dang windows he doens't get what it is he did.

Victor will under no circumstances get in even a warm car. I am sure he had some kind of experience before i got him with this. I have to start the car..get the ac going...and when it is "nice" inside his highness will gladly get in. A lot of people don't realize just how quickly a car heats up. I see people pump gas and leave their dog in while they run in or a quick run into the store. I carry two sets of keys so i can lock the car and leave the ac on...and even so I never take one eye off of the car just incase the engine should die. IT is 30 degrees hotter for dogs than it is for us. SO a nice 70 degree day is alot more like a hundred.

IT happened to me in a van at one of those long traffic lights. Jim had something wrong with the van so that the engine heat was coming in by the passenger side. IT was 103 that day and we had been out hiking in the woods. I remember saying Jim...i am awful hot..the heat is coming in on my feet....and then that was it. By the time he pulled through the light i was doubled over. HE pulled into the parking lot and i managed to get out but i coudln't stand up straight...he led me into this tanning salon where i thought i was going to throw up so we made it to the bathroom and that was that. THe next thing i knew i was laying in a lake of water on the floor and felt like i was laying on a slab of ice. THe abulance said only the veins in my neck had not collapsed. IT can happen that fast i promise you.

This is so sad. I mean even with windows open it gets extremely hot in a car but it doesn't even sound like he did that. He should not be allowed to own dogs. :(
