In all honesty, their relationship has shocked me beyond belief. Before we had Syd, Harry HATED ALL children, and he's not too fond of adults outside the immediate family. I was worried that we would have to rehome him when I found out that I was pregnant, and that best case scenario would be that he would ignore her and I'd be hyper vigilant about keeping them apart. But, no, we brought her home from the hospital and he was immediately smitten. This is HIS baby! When newborn Syd would cry, he would bring her his favorite toys and leave them with her, which was adorably thoughtful, and surprising being that he's very possessive of his toys.
Now, this little girl can do whatever she wants to do with him, and he adores it. He still hates every other child on the planet, but this one is his, and he is very protective of her.
If only he was still going to be around when she starts dating...
TBH, I'm not so surprised. Very impressed. I think if I were to have a kid, Tyr would be like that. Some mals are incredibly sensible.
IMO, they should be able to do that, and I think too many breeders are so caught up in drive that they overlook the sensibility part of the temperament.
Sometimes they have a different perspective when it's their family. He sounds like an excellent dog and a wonderful mal.

That is so heartwarming! And CP, I agree 100%. It seems like nowadays the emphasis is always on more and more drive. If I were to get a mal (something I have thought a lot about), I would be looking for a breeder that breeds dogs that are still 'sensible'. It's so important, because outside of the ring, you have to LIVE with that dog, yanno?

Now, don't y'all go thinking that Harry is a sensible dog. He's still a working bred Malinois. He can escape any kennel, can open any door, his problem solving ability is amazing! Then, he gets all wound up and runs head first into a wall. They are "special" dogs.
Just this morning when I fed him, he was so excited to eat that he couldn't find his dish. He was spinning around the room, barking and drooling, and continually running past his dish. Hard to believe that this is the same dog that knows how doorknobs work.
