Hi everyone think I might have posted before regarding other dogs but cant remember....anyhow,

I'm looking after my girlfriends new pup its staying with me until it gets used to her other dog (they met today went well)...

OK the pups been with me for only 2 days its a female Lab-mix got her at 8 weeks.

Now I've read all about leaving for short periods etc ect yesterday left for 15 min on and off burking (too long I guess) today left her about the same time (15) no noise for maybe 5 min but then crazy whinning and damm is she a loud one.

Also tryed leaving her in my bedroom and shut the door with me still in the front room, she went nuts poped and let loose so she was off course freaked out.

She seems fine outside so far very happy a little anxius at first but I think thats the stairs (she to small at the moment to walk down them) but I took her to meet G.F dog we walked past some big noisey machine (road works) not to much of a problem seemed ok.

Ok what I'm dreading is that she does not turn into a barking whinning dog when I leave, I've had to look after a 8 month old rott-dopp mix because of this problem and the owner had to give him up..so I'm paranoid big time.

1. how long should I leave her, lets say I leave for 5min and she burking the hole time should I alway come back or wait for her to stop even if its for 10 seconds then return...what I'm trying to say is I live in a small block of appartments and it so loud that my naibers will get angry pritty fast so I will have to return even if its 5 mins of total noise. hope that made sense.

Today after leaving her and coming back she went on a chewing mission (I was doing my washing so I had no choice I had to be gone for around 10-15 min (washing machines are outside).

2. how many times a day should I leave and come back and at what intervals
example try it every hour every day etc.

Any help please post I'm not being lazy I've read up on this but sort of need a helping hand I really want to get this right from the start. I mean she's only been with me 2 day so maybe I'm asking to much of her.

If maybe someone can sort of talk me through it.....like a said I looked after a dog with this problem before and god knows how that dog is doing...long post sorry just paranoid maybe.

Many thanks Jim any help truly apprecaited.

For starters, does she have a crate? At her age, she would be best off crated when you leave her. In the crate, as long as she isn't going to shred it and eat the pieces, she can have some sort of towel or mat. Also she can have a durable toy to help keep her occupied - a puppy kong filled with treats is my first choice.

Try to give her some exercise as well as a chance to potty prior to leaving her so she'll be tired. Make sure she potties after exercising, otherwise you'll likely come back to a mess.

Then work on leaving for short periods of time. I start with leaving for no more than a second or two. Then gradually increasing the time. Also make sure she's desensitized to the departure routine - go through whatever you would do prior to leaving, but don't leave. Do that a few times a day.

When you return, ignore her until she's calm. You can let her out of the crate, and if she needs to be taken out to potty, then you'll have to do so, but keep interactions down to a bare minimum.

"For starters, does she have a crate" Thanks for the fast reply no she does not, this is one thing I was wondering about, we did buy a small tent but it did'nt to the trick we will get a super toy to have with her when I leave.

When I left her today she had been out for some time having done her deeds and all and was basically asleep once she got home, so I want and done the washing thinking that would be a perfect time she was ok for a while like I said but then when't crazy on and off.

Yep the getting ready to go out I will start to do I have read about that should of really started that yesterday.

And yep the ignoring I do all the time, today it was for almost 45 mins whilst she was going metal.

OK thanks for that...with having her in a crate how will that help if you can explain briefly and should she sleep in the crate and be in the crate at points in the day time also (I ask because and can just see her knowing whats about to happen), so she gets used to it. the tent thing works but I had to cut the door off to make the entrance bigger so she would go in ohh well.

And at what intervals should I leave the house 1-2-3-4 times a day?. every 1-2 hours I guesing every 2-3 hours or so?...

Thanks again...sorry for asking so many questions but I sort off what to fine tune it (get it right).

The way the crate helps is that she won't be able to leave messes around the house - and most dogs won't potty where they sleep, so it'll help in general with potty training. Also, you had mentioned that she "went on a chewing mission". A crate will definitely minimize - and maybe prevent - that as well as preventing her from being able to do any damage to the house or herself. For some dogs the crate can give them a sense of security, but not always. So it doesn't necessarily help with barking, but it can prevent or lessen other issues.

She should be in the crate periodically throughout the day with you there. And you can also put her in her crate and give her a toy but don't close the crate door, so she doesn't expect to always get locked in there either. With my dogs, if I have them out with me and leave their crate open, they'll crawl in there on their own from time to time.

I would try to practice leaving at least 3 times a day, probably no more than 5. And in between that, go through the departure routine without leaving. Vary it too, so she doesn't learn that every other time you put on your shoes and grab the keys you're really leaving. As for how many hours in between? I don't know lol. I've never timed it like that. But I would wait until she's calm, then have some time for interactions and for a bit of a normal routine before leaving again. So probably at least a couple hours in between. If you do it too soon you risk her still being in a state of agitation and stress which will then be increased with you leaving.

Feel free to ask as much as you want. :D And please get us some pictures of her. :D:D

Jimmy,
I agree with everything Corgipower said. Since she said it all, nothing to add as suggestion as to how to help your puppy. But,I can suggest crate you may want to look at.

I used to use plastic kennel type crate but,now I switched to I-crate.I-crate comes with slider/divider you can use depending on puppy's growth, and it is very spacey and it can have 2 outing doors if you want. I use this for my dog and, also got crate cover to make it look like real den-like.And this crate is collapsible so,easy to bring to other location if needed to like when you visit relatives house etc.

My dog really enjoy napping there too. Sometimes,I find her still in the crate on her back even though I already opened the crate door for her to out.

And I think that placing crate in the bed room you sleep will help too because the room has familiar scent of you for skippy.

Keep us posted.Skippy looks really nice. What is she holding? Squeaky toy?

Hi thanks for reply arrr some mouse thingy, yer I'm going to see how it go's today, at least I've had a good 7-8 hours sleep becouse 3-4 ant enough.

I think a good crate will be a very good idea I will bye one at the weekend.

Well at least she likes her bone that seems to stop her from chewing stuff and seems to be the top toy...BUT another question I do take it away from time to time and replace with food I do this because I dont want her to get bored with it, is this a good idea?. will she get bored with toys.....I will have to bye some more, the little fluffy things the girlfriend got dont really cut it....so I need a couple more top toys so I can to the swap thingy and train her to drop etc...

Many thanks....I'm still tired hopefully the meeting with the missis dog will go well again today and she can sleep there for a couple of nights prrr hard work...

I have more questions but I think I'll wait one step at a time.

cheers jim

Taking toys away is a good idea. :D And doing it by trading for something else is the best way. :D

Some dogs get bored with toys if they're always out, some dogs don't.

And YAY!! on the 7-8 hours of sleep. Welcome to the joys of puppies and no sleep. :lol-sign:

She is adorable!!!

Hey, yep I get the bone out when she starts chewing my floor (of all things) let her have it for a bit then take it (trade it)..seems to work.

7-8 sleep I still had to get up at 5 am to take her out,,,good job I'm at home most days.

How does one have a young dog and manage to leave for work for the hole day. I guess you cant.....I'm off for a nap, dogs passed out.

Haha!! It's not easy!! But the sleepless nights usually don't last too long. I always tried to get puppies when I had some time off from work. I also was working at a kennel, so puppies could go with me to work. :D

It certainly helps when someone is able to be home for most of the day.

Yer, I mean there will be 2 off us looking after her and its still going to be hard work.

One thing how long normally would you say that puppies grow out of the barking thing when you leave them alone?.

HELP> I have similar problem.

I've been reading the problem about the puppy barking and whining when left alone. I have a similar problem. I rescued a boxer puppy (8weeks). I have both the travel crate and an I crate that I've set up for his size. But whenever I put him in either, he cries and barks and whines sometimes for an hour. Then he'll stop for awhile and start up again, (especially if he hears anyone moving around in the house.) I've put the travel crate in the spare bedroom, hoping to get some sleep. I gave him an old T-shirt and a Kong puppy chew toy. But it doesn't seem to be working. It's been a week tomorrow, shouldn't he be getting better? He still wets in his crate, but has stopped pooping in it, thank goodness. I want to be able to crate him when I leave, even if other family members are home, at least until he's house broken, but my husband can't stand the barking and whining. Any ideas?
HELP.

^In my experience, actually, it's really just sticking 'by the book' and putting 'faith' in you what you're doing. =P

My situation was a little different, however. We did something a little bit unorthodox, we unlocked the crate (but put her in a confined area). We then lined puppy pads outside the crate (covering the ENTIRE bathroom floor ) . Thus, she had the mobility to go in and out and do her business. That is..we HOPED (this would backfire often).

It's all very strange to me (I'm by no means a dog expert). Because like magic one day...she just...stopped crying =]
