I was supposed to get to help whelp a borzoi litter for a breeder who lives about an hour from me. I was very excited because I've never seen puppies born. The bitch went into labor a couple of days early, and she didn't nest or go off of her food or anything. So, I got the call last night that she was having contractions, and the puppies were on their way.

I had to take care of my animals and then drive out through a terrible storm, so I arrived about two hours after the call to discover she'd had 7 puppies in 54 minutes (4 males, 3 females)--all weighing in at over a pound. It was apparently the fastest, easiest whelp ever. Mom and puppies are all doing well.

I enjoyed getting to see the newborns (sorry, I didn't have a camera with me), but one day, I'd like to be there for the process, not just the results.

Oh man I hope Teeny doesn't whelp that quick!! I'm 3 hours away from her breeder's (where she'll be) and he's supposed to call me when she starts to show signs of labor. I don't want to miss anything!!!!

How common is it for alapahas to need c-sections? Just curious. Is she confirmed pregnant? Teeny puppies will be so cute!! :D

My mom is 85 and she has never seen a puppy born. It is pretty darn miraculous, sorry you didn't get to be there. THe results are fascinating too.

Holy Toledo that's fast! My girls seem to average one pup an hour but my average litter size is 5 pups so it's not that bad. At least they almost always whelp in the daytime instead of through the night. Good girls. :)

My (few) litters were always about 1 every 45min to an hour. Wow that is fast!

Although I didn't get to see the whelping, I did get to help with one thing. Shortly after I arrived, the breeder and the vet took the dam outside for a potty break, and another experienced borzoi breeder stayed behind with me to watch over the puppies. One of the girls was not happy that her mother had gone and decided to go on a walkabout in the whelping box to find her. This little girl was so determined and so loud, and she quickly pulled herself quite a distance from the group.

I got to be the person to reach in and put her back with the herd so that she wouldn't get chilled. She gave me a talking-to as a I picked her up and put her back. At only two hours old, she was already declaring, "You are not the boss of me!" That one's gonna be a handful and will probably be my favorite in the litter.

No. I would love to have another (and will someday), but at the moment, the ark is full. Besides, I have a feeling the breeder will end up holding onto Little Miss Bossy Gerbil--at least for awhile anyway.

Little Miss Bossy Gerbil. Now that would be an awesome registered name. :rofl1:
