Any1 know of any GOOD chi breeders?

My friend wants a chihuahua, she knows i love dogs and know alot about them soo she keeps sending me links to breeders she finds online to see what I think about them.. each one is worse than the next. "teacups" pocket sized" "deer head" no health testing.. EVERYTHING IS ABOUT SIZE ughh and of course loud obnoxious music. Maybe its because my dog is from a shelter and im used to adoption fees but is $3000+ normal price?

so she asks me to look for a good one for her, but i cant seem to find any good ones myself! I dont know a whole lot about breeding but all she is looking for is a healthy, happy, within breed standard as far as size, preferably long coated Chi. She always wants a breeder that will ship and "shows that they love their dogs". The temperment of the mother and father dog is very important to her. It would be her first dog ever, she has done alot of research, babysat my dog yogi and feels like she is ready

the thing im concered about, is that she loves the dog park and such, and plans to take her dog there once the dog is old enough (they have a small dog section) Ive heard that most chis are not very good with other dogs, is this true? even if the dog is trained and socialized with other dogs?

where did Jessie get her Chis? She is somewhere in Florida as well, and she has a long haired baby.

I haven't heard that they are bad with dogs. Many websites and many people base their assumptions on Chihuahuas on the typical Chi, that means the BYB under socialized Chi.

does she wants a breeder close so that she can visit? Will shy fly out? Is she okay not going to the breeder's house?

I was looking at some and almost threw up, one said "we almost always will have about 40 puppies to choose from" :yikes:

As far as the cost, 3000 is really not all that uncommon for a toy breed puppy from a good breeder. The thing is if the breeders are doing all the testing that you would want done it can get costly. Also the risks of toy breed births are increased and therefore so are the costs. Add to that the problem that you dont end up with a litter of 7 to 11 but many times only 1-3. Bella was a single birth, Armani and Elle each had 1 sibling. Therefore, they cant really spread the cost around very effectively.

I have been looking at Biewer Yorkie breeders and found a really great one and her pet quality pups are about 2000 if she every has any available.

Also, remember the waiting lists may be very long for toy breeds.

This breeder I was talking about may have 1 to 2 litters a year which is only a handful of puppies... then she decides if she will keep any, then places in show/breeding homes, and then if there is anything left will sell as pets. Although, this is still a very new breed so it is a little different.

I personally think $3000 is VERY high considering that a lot of chihuahua people don't do THAT much health testing.

I'd recommend contacting Gayle here - CeeGee's Chihuahuas - her dogs are lovely and she herself is a very ethical person. LOVE her dogs temperaments and if I ever decided to get a Chih, it'd be from her.

$3000 is a lot for a toy or chi pet quality puppy. I see about $750-$1400 for pet quality papillons. A show quality for $2000 then maybe, but a pet for $3000? I think you can find something a lot cheaper and probably in the $1000 something range.

My great aunt is retired from breeding chi's (I think) but her lines were/are some of the top animals in the us, and I know that she started health testing, etc. when the tests became available. Her kennel name is Will O'Wisp, if you google them you should be able to find some of the folks working with her lines. At first glance I found these and they look decent.

I make no claims as to the quality of these breeders (though the last one does ob, confo, and agility with hers ), they just popped up when I googled aunt Millie's kennel name. She was super picky where she sold her pups. It's a start anyway. Hope it helps a little.

I went through this for someone in my life. Wow, this is a hard breed to look online for! So many BYB's both large and small scale, I was underwhelmed. So I started making phone calls and emailed the Chi Club of America. I got on lists and started asking. Then I found my state Chi club and inquired, phone calls were the best way to get information. Plus I looked at show catalogs, went to some shows, and got to know some breeders.
And get this, after all of that, they got a dog for free from an accidental litter.:rofl1: All that hard work for nothing! So I hope it helps you instead.

$3000 is VERY high even for a top quality show/breeding bitch in the chi world.
infact i wouldnt pay more than $1500 for a top quality proven champion bitch...

for a pet...$600-$900 would be about right even here in connecticut...

off the top of my head i dont know any in that area.
have her contact the chihuahua club of america in her location (google chihuahua club of america and her zipcode) they will be able to point her in the direction of some GOOD breeders.

and as a rule of thumb, if properly socilized chis are very social little dogs...
chis love to play and are active, they tend to prefer to play with other chis, but if raised and socilized properly they are fine with most other dogs.

im still looking. my head hurts.. I thought that teacup was the worst of it.. HA!!
ive seen micro, teacup, tiny teacup, micro minis, pocket sized,ect..
and it seems to me like with many chi breeders.. size is everything!
its all about weight at birth, weight now, and aprox weight full grown.
health testing? totally unecesary! hes going to weigh 3 pounds! who needs health testing on his parents?? who of course are not pictured on this website anywhere.

oh and how does a chi breeder, with the average litter size being 2-4 puppies have 5 pages of available pups with 10 pups on each page?!

but on a side note. all of this is making me want a chi puppy soooo bad! lol they are so cute!


also for you chi enthusiasts.. whats all this about merles? ..

merles are controversial...the merle color didnt show up untill very reacently...making it very likely that the color was introduced by mixing in something with merle coloring normally...(likely a doxie)
and unfortunatly as with any merle dog, breeding merls can be hazardous, especially being that chis can be hidden merles...
some enthusiasts are trying to get the color banned simply because...it wasnt there before, its there now, they must have had it intorduced somehow, must be mixed...

however as of right now it IS accepted in the ring, and it is very pretty, just be sure its not from a merle to merle breeding and watch for health issues.
id love a merle long hair one day, but i also dont think id get one if i was looking for a show/breeding prospect.

finding a good breeder is incredibly difficult! the breed is INCREDIBLY media popular and that makes for ALOT of BYB's...*sigh*

size IS important...but not in the way many of these byb sites are advertising...
if your friend is planning to show knowing the parents weights and an aprox adult weight of the puppy is important because there is such a small accepted range...a chi should be between 2-6 lbs and in the ring males tend to do best when on the smaller end of the range and females do better on the upper end...
if not planning on showing/breeding however size can be important depending on family...a home with young children will do better with a puppy on the larger end of the scale...one with no young children however will work for any size. when it comes to all the fad words though the only ones that are interested in that are the ones in it for a fashion acessory.
(as a side note for the average person anything under 3lbs is way too tiny...)

wheres your friend located? and is she looking for long or short haired?

she lives in Miami, shes looking for long haired. gender doesnt matter, as far as size she said 4-6 would be the best weight. Small enough to be carried in a carrier when she flies or goes on trips and large enough to enjoy walking with us and the rest of the crew

I have a question, I'm looking for breeders but I don't exactly know what health screenings I'm looking for, obviously Hip dysplasia is not a big Chi problem. what should a Chi breeder screen for?
