Big dogs or little dogs, do you prefer one over the other?

I really love dogs of all sizes, and the smallest dog I own is a 6 pound chihuahua mix, and the largest is a near 100 pound pit bull. And I have everything in between from dachshunds to beagles to a 50lb english pointer/dalmation mix.

I probably have a little bit of a preference to small dogs, but nearly every breed I plan to own one day in the far future, is a large breed dog. I want a Saint Bernard, a Walker Hound, a Bloodhound, and a Komondor. All big, big dogs. About the only small breed I don't own that I'd love to own one day is maltese.

But I'll always have a housefull of dogs that are all sizes, I really don't have a say in the breed or preference, LOL. My dogs all picked me.

I like all kinds of dogs too and have had mostly medium to large dogs all my life until I got these little rug rats. Now, as I am getting older with a bad back, I think my big dog days are probably over. I need a dog I can pick up if it needs to be rushed to the vet. Like this last episode with my son's dog and his girlfriend's dog....it was really hard for us to hoist these injured animals into the car without making them worse. If it had just been me, I would have been in trouble. Simba weighs about 80 lbs. But yeah....there are plusses and minuses to both I guess depending on one's preference or as in your case Fluff, the dogs' preference. lol

I've stated this before. 25-55 pounds is ideal. I don't like them smaller but any larger I feel if they got hurt I couldn't carry them a good distance. Like if they got hurt while we were hiking I know I can carry my Border Collies home. I'd be more likely to go smaller over larger, but I certainly don't mind dogs of any sizes. My only concern is if I need to carry them for whatever reason. Will I be able to do so?

I love and respect all dogs, but my husband and I are definetly large dog lovers! The bigger the better! Right now I have 6 husky/labs ( parents and 4 kids) all house dogs all at about 75-80 pounds. I would love to own a Great Dane and a Bloodhound, my husband would like to have a St. Bernard and a Newfoundland. We had a litter of pups last year and my husband was fascinated with their growth rate and was always weighing them. He gets quite a kick how a little newborn can turn into such a huge dog! There is nothing like the security you get with large dogs, especially when there are sleeping with you. THAT can't be beat. Yes, they can be overwhelming at times, when it feels like they've taken over the house, but I wouldn't trade any them for the world.

Personally I prefer dogs that I don't have to bend over to pet. Back problems.

Romy, that is a good point. You should have seen me trying to improvise with Chuli when I was trying her out on agility. LOL. I sometimes used a wooden spoon with a long handle with peanut butter smeared on the spoon. But thankfully, for some reason it doesn't hurt my back to bend over. I just have to be careful of it now not to jolt myself or lift too much weight. Even lifting Jose` too many times in a day strains my back and he only weighs about 12 LBS.

I also like that security feeling with a good sized dog. I loved having my Doberman and GSDs, known protectors. When the Chihuhuahuas bark at the door, anyone could tell they are nothing more than little scamps. I still have my sign up on my window though that reads, "I don't dial 911" and it has a picture of a Doberman on it. LOL. That combined with the Chi yaps...well, do ya think anyone knows I don't still have a Doberman? Rffffffff.

I have an Aussie and I love Aussies which I believe are medium sized dogs but I'd absolutely love to have a little bit dog like a Yorkie or Chi wa wa or a a mix of a small dog, too. Maybe someday, eh?

Big dogs, some are easy and some are harder to deal with because of their size. However, they are very lovable also, to say the least!!

for me, it usually depends on my living situation. If i had all the land i wanted, then i would definetly get another GSD (sable) and a merle aussie <3 but because ill be living in an apartment, ive been looking at my options for small dogs. ive been leaning towards Paps or Long coated Chis. Pretty much anything but min pins

As for which kind I like better. I like larger dogs

but i must admit, those lil doggy purses really make me wonder.. lol they are so darn cute!

Being a big dog lover , the only thing that bothers me is if Ollie gets really hurt or sick how to get him into the car to the vets !! I've talked of my concerns at my Clinic and te said they'd help me out should it happen . As my Goldens grew old I could get them into the wagon by placing their front legs up and then whomping their rear in .... bt then I was 10 years younger !

just dont spend too much on one, because from experience most dogs phase out of them pretty quickly... they are okay as puppies but once they are older they want no part of being in them for any length of time.

The only "bag" I use is my PetFlys carrier (shout out to Foxy!!) and only as a car seat.

If I am taking him somewhere I usually just take a leash... even works in a dressing room... take off my shirt, place on bench... he lays on my shirt and watches me try on clothes, :lol-sign:

Usually medium - large/giant.

Most of the breeds I'm interested in are the medium sized, super athletic ones. Next I have a real love for Bullmastiffs, wolfhounds and danes. (and more recently, dogues)
But... Pugs, omg I used to not have much of an interest in them but I want one so badly now.

Oh, and I think one day I'll just have to give up owning cats so I can surround myself with sighthounds.

Honestly with the small dogs I notice you forget how small they are. I'm sure it's the same with big dogs too. Every now and then I see a picture of the dogs next to someone or see them outside next to someone and it strikes me how tiny they are. They sure don't seem tiny in everyday life! They make up for their size with some very BIG personalities (Nard especially)

I have only recently (past 3 years) become a small dog person. I used to dislike them, now I realise it was my loss totally!
I like all dogs, I would LOVE a GSP one day. I just have small dogs now because they suit my life style, they are portable, can go anywhere, are snuggle bugs and really athletic.

There are two barks that REALLY annoy me and that is a GSD and a Staffie. They drive me mad.
My two don't really bark at all. When they do, it sounds like a medium dog barking.

I'm a fan of the big dogs. GSD's, Danes, Rottweilers, APBT (ok they're a medium but still).

I've never owned a small dog, the smallest dog I had was an ACD and she was probably 35-40 lbs until she got obese. Great dog though, I miss her still and it's been 7 years.
