How totally ridiculous. Wonder what they think of SD pulling wheelchairs and doing other work, I can just imagine the article about that .

The problem is that to the average person this doesn't look crazy. Their arguments look good unless you really know about guide dogs. They say the dogs work to hard and live their lives in harness. They say that the dogs don't get to play and be normal dogs (and if you meet a guide dog you aren't allowed to pet it.. so the public would buy that). Peta also says that blind people won't be able to see if their dog gets sick... To your average Joe these arguments look good.

But anyone who know someone with a Service dog knows this is all wrong. These dogs are taken to off leash parks where their harnesses are taken off and they get to romp and play with other dogs. One lady I knew like to visit schools with her Guide dog and after teaching the children about the dog she would remove the harness and the dog would get a ton of petting. At home usually a guide dog is just that a dog. Getting to play and act just like any other dog. And they are kept so well groomed by the owner that the first little bump or difference would be notice. Sure some things would be missed but not everything and they do go for regualr check ups. It is not all work and no play for a guide dog.

I am actually glad they say stuff like that because it undermines their credibility so when they talk about favoring pitbull bans they won't be taken as seriously.

Well, the Coppinger's opinions in their book about "Dogs" pretty much summed up service dogs as being "slaves". :p

Um, ew...yet just another personal opinion which should be taken with a generous lump of salt.

PETA is just a bunch of nut cases! NO NO NO these dogs are not "RETURNED" once they are done, that is stupid! My nephew has autism..his only 7, and his service dog, when he becomes to old to work, will be a loving pet.. ive never seen an organization that requires you to return the old one, they are not ink cartridges!

as for everything else, its total crap. have you ever seen a service dog sad or depressed? i havent. because they are doing EVERY DOGS DREAM JOB! they get to be with their people 24/7, help with what they can, be a part of their daily lives

The thing is the GENERAL PUBLIC is not full of common sense...

They may not KNOW ANY SERVICE DOGS! So they take what is told to them.
They may not KNOW what a service dogs daily routine is and so if someone TELLS them what it is, they take that as fact.
They do NOT KNOW the "procedure" for the life of a SD...so will basically take information that has been spoon fed to them...much like this article.

As for PB bans....again, the general public will take the path of least resistance...if you TELL THEM what to think the MAJORITY of them think it, it is much easier than researching and finding out the truth for themselves! And yup, it sounds harsh, but it is true...Hence why we have issues with BSL as it is. Ignorance is bliss....and if they aren't personally affected (in their minds) by whatever is going on, they just take what is given to them and continue on.

It is the same with:

BSL
Dog Shows
Service Dogs
Working Dogs

Misconceptions abound, but down right nasty untruths are more common as we continue down this road of governmental mettling (sp). It is a right to own my property....and now they are tailoring what property i can have, and what i have to do with that property....i dunno, i know i see my dogs as family, but they are technically property.

SIGH

Whatever is going to get PETA the most amount of attention is what they will do, because it will get posted everywhere and the average everyday joe blow will find some merit in it, and that is how they sway opinions...spoon feed them BS and they shall heed the call...

Most people don't know people with Service dogs. Look at all the people who think PETA is a good idea. Lots of average pet owners think PETA and HSUS are good and nice. Those people dont' likely know any guide dogs. Heck I don't know any guide dogs.

Its just too bad, PETA does some great work revealing animal cruelty (food industry and vanity testing) but when they do this it makes them look stupid and thus degrades the good things they do.

PETA does no good. Ever. Any "good" they do is only one step further towards ending what they view as "domestic slavery".

I did see something on animal planet once where these people rehomed their retired GSD service dog when she got too old. They did find her a good home though. I also saw something else where a woman with a Saint Bernard service dog simply kept her dog as a pet when he got too old and got a St. pup and trained him to be her new service dog. This would lead me to believe that it depends on whether people want multiple dogs, etc. I have never heard of service dogs being returned to the organization that provided them, though.

And I agree with everyone else that PeTA sucks. A lot.

ETA: And I wanted to say that I have only seen one service dog who looked unhappy (well, maybe tired is more the word). He was with a girl in a wheelchair and he looked kinda old and weirdly bred. The other service dogs I have come across have been the some of the happiest dogs I've ever met.

i know a lot of dog people and i only know one person (irl) with a working service dog. and we have one client at work with a seeing eye dog. peta is good at being persuasive, even when they're wrong.

too few joe publics know the truth about peta. it's frightening.
