in terms of how the coat works for chis:
smooth (short) is Dominant
long is Resessive
so short to short will have ALL short coated pups
long to long will have ALL long coated pups
short carrying for long to short carrying for long will produce some short, some short carrying long and some long
a short to a long will produce some short carrying long and some long.
in order to get short and long coated pups in the litter both parents have to at least be resessive for long.

I am really, seriously thinking of looking into the breed more, I am thinking waaay ahead, but basically a few years from now I have thought about getting a toy breed, show quality pup to show (Maybe breed?) I have looked at Paps, Poms, Min Pins and Chi's so far, I tend to lean away from longer coats because I like to easy care of a short coat, and that keeps leading me back to short coated Chi's or Min Pins... I only hesitate on Chi's because I would like to maybe do some agility as well and though I have seen a couple of Chi's doing it, they are pretty tiny for it...
As much as I love my JRTs and I may very well stick with them, there are very, very few breeders I would feel comfortable working with and one of my favorite, most trusted is also no longer breeding

long is ressessive, if your chi is long haired it deosnt carry for short.
there is a "brush coat" that occasionally shows up in chis but its a fault and i dont know what the genetics behind a "medium coat" are...mabe thats what your thinking about?

as a side note if your only concerns about a chi (long or otherwise are grooming and agility prospects...)
grooming for both coats is minimal...it takes me mabe 5 mns tops to comb out each wowie...(all 3 are longs) and another couple minutes for nails.
and while a chi will never run agility like a jrt or border collie, they are fast little dogs with alot of spunk and attitude, eager to please and suprisingly athletic...

I would not decide based on coat alone, short has always been a bit of a preference for ease of care, though the JRTs are easy either way as they don't seem to have issues with matting. It's nice to hear even the long coat Chis are fairly easy to care for because I love the looks of both coats.
As for agility, I would not be looking for a rocket, I would simply like to have a dog to play with, I am not seriously competitive in agility but like the game.
