What are dalmations' unique dietary needs?
Dalmatians are unique in that almost all Dals, with the exception of backcross dogs, are HUA (high uric acid) - unlike other breeds of dogs, they cannot completely metabolize purines. The process stops at uric acid, which in other breeds is broken down further to allantoin. Because of this, Dalmatians should be kept on a low-purine diet to prevent formation of urate stones.

Please note that low PURINE does not mean low PROTEIN. Dalmatians require just as much protein as other dogs; however, instead of the protein coming from purine-rich foods such as organ meats, it should come from lower-purine meats such as chicken muscle meat. Eggs are very low-purine, along with foods such as cottage cheese, and can be used to get higher protein levels in a low-purine diet.
