and I guess it could go for hand gestures as well. I think a lot of people use hand signals/cues with verbal cues or use them interchangeably? Or maybe, not, but this is the case for some. :p Anyways, what are some of the more funny gestures/commands your dog has learned?

One of my new favorites.. I look at a dog, point at them with my index finger and then turn my hand around so that the palm is upward and flex my finger in a come here motion. :D It is sooo funny, they know it pretty well and come every time. it's not meant in a serious way at all and is all fun and games and Buddy tends to hop his way over.. lol.

Another verbal cue that I find hilarious is the word vacuum which means they can come into the kitchen and eat something off of the floor that we have dropped or what have you. And they can only come into the kitchen if we say that, in case we drop something they are not supposed to have like onion. I took Buddy to my parents late last year and I dropped something in their kitchen and I said vaccuum! and Buddy came barreling through to their kitchen eager to look for his treat. :rofl1::rofl1: My dad nearly fell over laughing. lol

Dora learned this one as a joke one day and it stuck. All of the other dogs will go to their crates upon the command "Crate", but instead she sits and won't budge. You can pull her collar, push her body, drag her, etc. and she just goes limp. Of course, she's enjoying it the whole time, and if I change the command "Get in your Hole", she hops up and runs right to her crate. Sometimes we do this at dog shows when there are a lot of kids around to spice things up. I think it kind of shows them that forcing a dog isn't always productive. lol

Speaking of hand signals, one of my favorites was one of my girls I taught to sit up with a hand signal - very subtle. We were at a dog show and a long time breeder was telling an interested party that "collies can't sit up, their backs just aren't strong enough". I'm about 10 feet from my dog, who is on a sit stay on the other side of these two ladies. I quickly give her the 'sit up' signal, which she instantly responds to, and make a comment to the effect of "some can" and the lady on the receiving end of the information just bursts out laughing, watching my dog hold this pose for close to a minute!

Chloe has learned squirrel

If I say the word squirrel, she will go around the yard on squirrel patrol, and look for them...

I point to my ear and tell Victor to say THANK YOU or GOOD BYE or whatever. Most people never see me point to my ear but he does and he knows it means speak.
IF i put up my fingers like there is an inch between my forefinger and my thumb VIctor knows i mean in his "inside voice". IF i wave my finger back and forth like i am conducting music, he knows i mean "SING". Palm up like a stop sign means NO SOUND we are doing something else. Pay attention. IF i take my finger and make it loop i want him to twist..either right or left.
THere are probably more but that is all i can think off rigt off the top.

THere was a man at the nursing home that drove me mad..i got Victor all calm and being good and this man says GET THE SQUIRRELS BOY SQUIRREEEELS~ or he meows like a cat. We try hard to avoid him it is not funny.

ASk victor where the night squirrels are and he wiill find you all the mouse nests at the guild.

Oh that is so funny! lol get in your hole.. heheheh
It started out as a joke. A woman was telling us she always told her dogs to get in their "den", with them being related to the wolf and all, they would 'understand' that command better. Then a wonderful little kid who was listening in asked "isn't a wolf's den just a hole in the ground?".

We don't really have any funny words for commands, but it's pretty funny when I toss a towel down and say "dry off" and Milo rolls all over it.

Maggie has totally mastered "go away." She can get pretty pushy wanting attention, especially right when I'm in the middle of something, so it's pretty useful. Of course I always give her loads of attention when I put down whatever I'm doing, lol.

It's funny though, I didn't intentionally train this command. She learned it because she had a habit of trying to wake me up in the morning with her cold nose and I would say it and push her away. Now she never even tries to wake me up anymore, unless she REALLY has to potty but it's rare.

I can also just say it in a sentence and not even look at her, and she'll "go away."

I don't think this is funny, but a lot of others do.

In my house, MINE is used in place of LEAVE IT for objects that they shouldn't pick up or touch. (Leave it is reserved for other animals).

I like 'Get Out of Here'. It sounds so mean, but we used it to get the dog out of the kitchen. Summer will leave and sit just outside the door.

My favorite nonproductive one is the ninja crawl. Summer will crawl across the room on her belly. It's just fun.

Bella picked up on "Back off!" With the others, if they're bothering us, we can say "Go lay down!" and they'll leave, but with Bella, she never picked up on that, and now litteraly backs up until she's far enough from you.

I'm working on something with Tinker Bell right now, that when I say "Who's the momma when the momma's not home?" she barks at me... Cause it's true, when her momma isn't home, I make a great replacement!

Oh and Summer's 'get back' command went from walking backwards to hopping backwards now. It's pretty cute.

Kona and I have one we do that's pretty cool.

She gets awful excited when Dad comes home from work, and she always like to flaunt that she gets to kiss him before I do. Well, when Dad finally does give me a kiss, she gets jealous.

I'll say "What? He's my daddy. All MINE!"

When I say "Mine" she'll growl and grumble at me like she's arguing with me :p

Morgan knows a marching band trick.

For those that aren't familiar with marching band stuff... all you need to know in this case is that you ALWAYS take your first step with the LEFT foot.

Anyways, I can ask Morgan "Which foot do you step off with?" and he will sit down and hold up his left paw. :D

I am so going to use it on my students at band camp next year. There is always a handful of kids that cannot remember the "left foot first" rule. This time, I'll be ready with Morgan at the sidelines... Look! Even the dog can step off on the correct foot! LOL!!

Now I just need him to learn to mark time... :p

PS: Thanks for this thread! It's giving me all kinds of ideas for Morgan! I'm running out of "fun tricks" to work on.

I LOVE that marching band one! How awesome. I don't think Izzy has any funny commands yet but she's still a youngin' so we'll get there.

We taught Lucy the "touchdown!" command for superbowl this year :) You put your arms up like the referees do, and she'll throw her front paws up in the air too.

And she knows the vacuum command too--only we say "Clean up!"

This is also my command.

I once knew a lab who knew the command "Can I see that?" in place of "drop it"

Mick knew that, too, Caleb's learning.

That's "Clean up" for us.

Mick knew "Come close". If he sat a little too far away, I'd pat my chest and say "Come close", and he'd scoot closer until he was wear I wanted him. Caleb getting the hang of it.

Caleb has a few that Mick didn't know:
"Scoot"- if he's sitting too far back for heel position, I'll say "Scoot" and he scoots forward.

"Stink bug"- has him looking from the floor to your hand waiting for you to toss on down for him to play with.

"I'm opening the oven"- sends him from the middle of the kitchen to the kitchen door way.

"Touch"- he touches what I put my hand near with his nose. He has an "Easy Button" type thing from Hallmark that plays Jingle Bells that he turns on and off that way, too.

"Can you pick that up for me?"- he'll pick up something I drop when I ask him.

"Get my slippers/the paper"- yep- he brings me my slippers and the newspaper. For the second one I say "Get the other one" (he'll pick up more than one of anything that way).

"Bring it here"- when he picks up something he isn't supposed to have. You'd be amazed at what this dog will pick up when he thinks he isn't getting enough attention. LOL

We taught Lucy the "touchdown!" command for superbowl this year You put your arms up like the referees do, and she'll throw her front paws up in the air too...
Caleb does that when we yell "YES!" during sporting events, only he leaps into the air and smacks your hands with both paws.

We have what we call the "kitchen rule" in our house. Basically it is to get the dogs out from under foot when we are cooking. Murphy is hilarious when he does it though. He walks backwards until he feels his feet touch the carpet at the edge of the living room and sits. Maya doesn't listen to it as well now that Murphy is around, she seems to think it only applies to him. We have an open floor plan in this house and she learned it in an apartment where there was a doorway into the kitchen, so that may be why she has some difficulty with it now.
Maya also knows come cuddle. We lay on the floor or on the bed and tell her to come cuddle. She will come running towards you and roll into you so that her back is against your belly and cuddle with you. It's really cute.
Chris can give Maya something that I need, like a hairbrush and say bring it to Mommy and she will bring it to me.
