Jake got dropped off at the vet this morning for a neuter, and they want to give him a parve booster shot?

They say they are doing it because they found a new strain of parvo.

I've never heard of this before?

New strains of viruses are popping up all across the board. Viruses mutate....plain & simple.

However, NO VET can just vaccinate your dog without your permission and honestly, if your dog was current on vaccinations, I see no reason for the booster. That baffles me.

EDIT: And I want to add that even if there was a confirmed new strain, chances are it is not included in the current vaccine. So again, why? That's what I would ask.

Oh, no. My mother told them we'd call them back about giving it to him.

I honestly see no reason, it's just another chemical that goes into my dogs. But I dont know anything about the booster shot.

a couple things. If its new a booster of the old stuff isn't going to do much. and Parvo is a disease of puppies. Unless the older dog has a severely weakened immune system their chances of parvo is pretty small. And if their immune system is that weak, will it be able to mount an effective immune response to a vaccine to give itself immunity??

Ditto this.

I also just wouldn't give it. But I suppose I'm a rebel like that.

My boss came to me like two days ago and asked me where i go to get my parvo boosters...

Im like, my dogs are all grown, did you get a new puppy? Wth?

Turns out hes getting parvo/somthing/somthing boosters for his adult dogs every year....

Vets need $$ I guess. You should see the vaccines they suggest for my indoor cats.

Most of the vets offices I have had any procedures done at require a current(most will accept within last 3 yrs) shot series.

What I found completely stupid was when my beagle was dying of cancer and had a giant tumor on her face they thought it would be a good time to vaccinate her. hello! She was dying anyway-was there a point of doing that?! that I was upset about.

Parvo is so rampant here I am not opposed to an occasional booster. We have had adult dogs with it-nothing like when pups have it but its still not fun.

Some vets will refuse to perform procedures without vaccinations
He's had his shots. He's up-to-date on everything.

For heaven sake's, they must have a Capstar everytime anyone of them stays there. Even though they are UTD on flea/heartwarm meds.

Yea, here's more information from Christie Keith ~

http://www.petconnection.com/blog/2008/02/08/parvo/

These reports all cite a press release from Oklahoma State University, dated January 14, 2008, as saying that OSU has identified a new variant of CPV, known as CPV-2c.

Is any of this true?

Well, there’s a press release.

And there’s a strain of parvo that’s not new as in, “just discovered yesterday,†but it’s new as in, “it’s eight years old now.â€

And it’s new as in, “we knew it was common in Europe but we only just looked for it in the U.S. and found it hereâ€:
and

It certainly doesn’t mean you need to re-vaccinate your dog; the logic of this suggestion, which I’ve seen dozens of times in the last two days, really escapes me, since if the vaccine works against this strain (which it does), your dog is already immune, and if it doesn’t, re-vaccinating him won’t do anything.

In other words, folks, if the existing vaccine didn’t cover the new strain (which it does), re-vaccinating your dog with the existing vaccine wouldn’t make one **** bit of difference. It would literally be no better than throwing a virgin in a volcano to placate the fates.
