New Suggie! New Suggie!!

Okay, I don't officially have a new sugar glider yet, but I will tonight! I've been meaning to post about this for a week now. It has just been so CRAZY around here!

Anyways, by the end of today, our suggie trio will be a quartet!

Backstory: The breeder from whom we've purchased all of our other sugar gliders had a "surplus" of white-face suggies. I didn't ask specifically, but I get the idea that with the economy doing what it's doing, a LOT of people that were on the waiting list for a white-face backed out at the last minute. So now she has a bunch of joeys that need homes. She decided to discount the price on them a little bit, and sent out a newsletter to all her previous adopters about it. So although we weren't planning to take on another suggie so soon... well, the world works in funny ways sometimes.

Ours is arriving a little before 5pm today. Like I said, it's another white-face (like Fiyero), and this one is a girl. I'm pretty sure the name is already picked out, but I have to meet her to be sure it fits.

I personally don't find them all too "difficult" to keep... but I am a very pet-oriented person, so I don't mind a challenge.

It's true that they do require a lot of special attention in the sense that everything needs to be double/triple/quadruple-checked... whether it be their diet, toy safety, bar spacing on cages, etc. They are very delicate and sensitive critters, but exceedingly curious at the same time, so they have a tendency to get themselves into a lot of trouble. And since they can climb and glide, absolutely nothing is out of their reach. Everything must be glider-proofed, which is a lot of work.

Plus, like most any other pet, they require a lot of daily attention and playtime, especially if you want them to build a strong bond with you.

Once you get the hang of things it just becomes routine, like with most any other pet. Written down, it looks like a lot of work, and it is, but it's a lot of fun at the same time and very rewarding.

Congrats! I get my new girl Saturday-sadly to replace one that passed This is my first young glider though so I am hoping she bonds to me a little easier/better.

There seems to be a lot of people lately having problems selling and a lot of people trying to rehome them.

They are just so interesting and for such little creatures full of personality. If the economy wasn't crap I would be interested in breeding -I love the genetic aspects of animals and this is one species I could afford to keep if I fell in love with them!

Whats your set up? We are thinking of building a big cage for play,but I am kinda going back and forth on that.

I had a male that someone gave me! Someone had dumped it at a pet shop.

He wasn't too social so I gave him to a guy with a girl so the poor thing would stop stressing...

I'm sorry to hear you lost a suggie. We had to put one to sleep back in March. Very sad.

Our setup is like this... we just bought a new cage that the current trio is staying in. It's this one exactly:

We LOVE it! It is the first large cage with less than 1/2"bar spacing that we've found that HASN'T made us want to tear our hair out. It is HUGE!! The only real problem is that it's so big it doesn't fit through doorways, but other than that, it's AWESOME. It isn't flimsy like the other cages we've had at all.

For playtime we have something similar to this:

It's big enough for both my husband and I to sit in, and the suggies can climb all around us. It's great for bonding, too, because we can just sit in there and watch TV until the new suggie decides to come visit with us on their own terms. It has worked very well. I actually have to repair ours... since a certain cat decided it wanted in the tent one day and ripped a hole in the side!

Anyways, our other cage (where the new girl is living until she's ready to move in with the rest of the colony) is kind of like this one:

It's a cheap cage, doesn't really fit together right, and the bars are pretty thin/breakable... but with a few modifications (mainly spring latches on all the doors and zip-tying all the gaps close) it works okay. Plenty of room for a sugar glider or two. We actually have two cages like this... Penn and Teller's first cage, and then a second that we bought for Elphaba and Fiyero. The new cage is definitely a BIG step up!

Of course, they have TONS of toys, but I'll save that for later. I've already taken up an insane amount of space here.

Pictures are coming, I promise! Not tonight, though. I want to give her a day or two to settle in before I stick a camera in her face. I know I would probably be grumpy about having my picture taken after being on an airplane all day! LOL!

I got this one after getting mine in a tiny tiny bird cage. the girl I got them form said she loved watching them do back flips-yeah,because thats the only thing they had room to do in the cage!

I want more though so I think I want to go bigger-but then again I think they'd rather be out so maybe play area is the way to go.

I want a tent-but can't think of were I would be able to set it up! My breeder uses one but said some don't like to use it cuz it teaches the glider to be below your waist-I figure it'll be just fine
