What if you talked to this person on the phone alot, and emailed back and forth often? If the person was knowledgeable about your breed, and knew about dogs. You have a good feeling about this person, and feel like they truely love the breed and will do right by the puppy. Would you still ship a puppy to them unseen?

It depends - I'd want references, and probably a homecheck- at least in the US (and I'm not currently thinking I'd be willing to export a pup that I bred) and I think I'd want to either hand-deliver the pup or have them fly here to pick pup up- but yeah, I can see it being a possibility. My next spitz will be coming from a situation like that, but his breeder will have known me for two years at that point, we've talked on the phone, and she knows me and my family of dogs at this point.

Like I always point out... :p Without breeders willing to believe in the goodness of peopel (and reasonable safeguards!), we would have a LOT fewer breeds here in the US.

I got my Papillion sent to me sight unseen. I spent a long time speaking with his breeders, asking and answering many questions. They felt happy with me. I did meet them after he arrived when I flew up for a business trip.

Would I do it, no. That is because I am a hypocrit and a control freak! LOL!

This is my personal experience with fostering, not breeding. I've never bred a dog. But when searching for a new owner for a foster I would never send them sight unseen, then again we don't ship any dogs either.

But I'm the wrong person to ask this, I end up keeping my fosters. LOL

Depends on a lot of factors.

If it was a well known breeder/exhibitor I probably would. If it was someone just looking for a pet I would probably ask more questions (why aren't they looking for a breeder closer to home? Have they got in touch with their regional breed club for help/info?) and if it was someone who is interested in getting involved in the show world, I would see if they contacted a breeder (or even a handler) near them for help on the "hands-on" stuff (stripping, etc.).

Pet pups no, not typically...show...well I'd likely already know of them from shows or my magazine or my lists, and EVERYONE talks...so yes.

My two bitches both came from show folks who hadn't met me F2F...just spoken a lot...my Leo, too. I am grateful they were okay with it.

I don't know if "I" would,,but I have bought 2 dogs without meeting the breeders in person,,when I was looking around,,and I found a breeder I was interested in,,I told them everything about my lifestyle, what I was looking for,,my experience, and supplied them with a ton of references prior to them even asking for the information. I also was willing to provide pictures of my place ,,basically I was an open book.

Both have worked out well, but I have not been on the other end of the stick. It's a reason I don't breed , I would be worrying all the time without checking things out first.

It would require a combination of getting to know the person and having a home check done by someone I trusted, like a local member of the breed club or something, depending on how well I knew the person I was selling the puppy to.

I'm exactly the same. I would buy from a breeder who had never seen me if I felt comfortable with them (although I would prefer to interact with the pups), but if I were to ever breed a litter I don't know that I could sell to someone I'd not seen.

Really when you get to know the family through another family member it's different . I did all my contacts before the computer era . First of all , I would have never sold through a site , and second never without a referral ! Bubba sired a good litter in Ohio , I had pick of litter and two more pups were brought back with him for those on my waiting list . It was a great breeding and all were pleased . This breeder trusted me and I her .

I have made some very favorable impressions about certain people while never having known them, myself. Depending on the person, there are some that I'd feel confident about placing a dog with, even though I've never met them. But when it comes down to it, I'd be asking that person to at least fly/drive down and pick up their puppy.

LOL, Renee. I was just about to say that if I ever have another litter, I would throw a puppy in your direction....you know.....to keep you on your toes. :D

And there are a few more people that I have not personally met, but would place a puppy with.

And for me, I don't sell dogs so these would techincally be called "farmed out" although I would not retain ownership. ;)

LMAO! Well, I'm honored . . . or are you trying to kill me?

I have to say that I seriously love having Tallulah. She's the missing piece that I didn't know was missing.

I was sold Blaze unseen. I had, though, emailed both David and Christine -with the same story of course- and talked to David on the phone multiple times about the litters, prices, deposits, studs, females, health testing, working ablility, and just general information about the stud I was looking at. They also knewn I knew Grace (long story, but basically they knew that Grace had gotten a Denise Wall dog -Denise and Christine are friends. They also knew my trainer. And Christine and I were on the same BC forum.

I honestly won't worry too much. If you talk to the person via email/phone and get good information about the person/lifestyle/other dogs/etc I don't see how it's much different than talking face to face.

I would talk to the person ALOT, require some good references and then probably make everyone drive/fly out to get their puppy so we could meet in person. There could be exceptions depending on circumstances and the relationship I had with/to the person.
