I had my sedation dentistry....OMG!!!!!

I had to put my last appointment off due to being sick but I finally went yesterday for sedation dentistry.

They had given me a valium the night before...I never felt it at all. I woke up at 2:30 a.m. and just read until I had to leave at 8:30 for my 9:00 appointment.

My mom came with me so that Mike could be home for the dogs, just in case she had to give the go-ahead for any additional work. I was having a bridge redone and a cleaning but they weren't sure if I needed anything else....I didn't.
Anyway, they got me into the chair, put the BP cuff/heart rate gadget on me and wrapped me in a blanket. Then came the drugs, 4 little blue helciun pills.

My mom sat in the chair and we chatted while the drugs took effect, it took about 1/2 an hour, though I was told it would be about 1 hour before I was to enter lala land.
The last thing I remember until almost 12 hours later, was giggling with my mom before the drugs took effect.
I can remember snippets of needle pain and I DO remember getting restless legs from the drugs, so bad in fact that it would stop me from ever having sedation dentristry again....that and what came next....

This is what I found SO frightening. My pre/post op info. sheet said that I had to have someone stay with me for 24 hours after coming home and that I was not to be around any stairs in case I was unsteady on my feet. I thought that it was likely overkill so I instructed Mike NOT to call my parents if he had to go back to the office, I said that I'd be fine....I'm really lucky that Mike's no dummy cause BOY did I NEED supervision.

I don't remember getting into the car after the procedure, or getting home, up the stairs, into bed, wandering around and having complete conversations, going into my medicine cabinet and trying to take various drugs (which my mom stopped me from doing) or trying numerous times, though completely unsteady on my feet, to venture down the stairs.

Until after 9:00 p.m. last night, I had no idea that my parents had even been at my home. I found a note that my mom left on the kitchen counter about giving me tylenol for pain, otherwise I would never have known that they had been here.
I had sat with my parents for over 2 hours "talking" (my mom said that I was so out of it but would not go to bed) I'm just baffled.
Today I feel like I've been dragged through a knot hole backwards, totally fuzzy brained (even more than usual) and kind of sick feeling.

I think I'd rather face the pain and fear that I have of the dentist. The feeling of being completely and totally vulnerable and helpless....not to mention dangerously still functioning..just too frightening to choose over the known pain and fear.

I have to say that I know that many other people have had really great experiences with SD, I may just have been given too much of a good thing...who knows.

i would talk to the dentist about the type of sedation they gave you, mine was the valium the niht before (which i too have yet to find actually helps me sleep) and a single pink triangle pill that i had to take 1/2 hour before my visit, i got another dose halfway through, the rest was similar with one huge difference i slept for 8 hours afterwards out cold then woke up a little fuzzy but fine in terms of motor function, ate and whent to bed...the day after i usually feel a little ditzy for a few hours but fine after ive realy woken up...

im thinking you had a bad reaction to the type of sedation medication used...

You may just be right cause holy crow....that was some bad day!

That sure makes me not wanting it !!!! I've FINALLY gotten over any fear ( except for the bill ! ) Luckily tooth nerves die as you get older , so I don't even get Novocaine unless it's major work . BTW thanks a lot !!! I have a repair job tomorrow !

Wow, thanks for the info.... I was thinking about getting the sedation dentistry, but my dentist nerves aren't nearly bad enough for me to want to go through all that!

Sounds like you had a helluva reaction to the sedative!

When I had my tubal, I had a similar reaction. After I got home, I wandered around - couldn't sleep and I was horribly depressed. At one point, I was standing at the kitchen sink, washing my favorite paring knife and getting it relatively sterile . . . to slice my wrist open. My sense of humor got the best of me when I stopped to think how ridiculous it was to worry about infection when getting ready to slash one's wrists

I found Sophie's almond butter in the cupboard where my cups are kept instead of the fridge today. I guess I smeared some in a toy for her and unloaded the dishwasher all around the same time yesterday/last night...who knows..(though I remember NONE of this). Anyway, I had to pitch it of course. It makes me think of the date rape drugs and what an awful and surprising effect some drugs can have on you. To be going through your day completely stoned though seeming somewhat normal...very dangerous..

I keep thinking that I could easily have dropped bottles of medication around my dogs. One advil could spell the end for little Tinker...
It'll be a cold day in 'you know where' before I ever volunteer to take another sedative like that.

The receptionist called me this afternoon to remind me about the appointment that I made as I left.:yikes: Is she freaking kidding????? How she managed to get me to agree to any appointment through all the drool and fog....while being held up by Mike and my mother. ;=(

I guess I'm going back for the permanent bridge on the 11th of November, no drugs for me no matter how scared I am.

I'll be metaphysically holding your hand! That does sound like an awful day if you really think about it...we can laugh at it now but yeesh. I get pissy enough after a night of heavy drinking if I can't remember everything that I said/did, never mind an entire DAY's worth of events.

Yeesh! That is scary. I didn't have quite that much reaction when I had my wisdom teeth out.

I did wake up in the middle of the surgery for a few minutes, though. Everything was blue tinted, upside down, floor on the ceiling and ceiling on the walls, no floor, floating, swirly twirly and out of place. I guess you could say I was a bit high on something! It was a really scary experience, though.

Geesh. Next time ask for nitrous oxide. That stuff is great

You'll find it takes awhile for all of it to get out of your system, Doc. I felt like I'd been poisoned for about a week or so.

Drink LOTS of grape juice to flush your system. It has a good blood cleansing effect. Lots of fiber, too.

Thank you very much for your testimony on this.. I have tmj with need of work on a back molar. They suggested this form to me as well but after reading that- no way on Gods' green earth..

Huh. I would also ask your dentist maybe about this type of sedation or research about it. I was put under for my 4 wisdom teeth when I was 18 and I went out and woke up just like a normal surgery, it was all done with gas, I am not sure exactly what chemical but no pills were involved and I did get a shot or two I remember. I just sat in the chair for 1/2 hour after waking up and I was fine and felt normal with no side effects. You could of been slightly allergic to something you are unaware of or maybe you were given too much. Maybe this type of sedation is usually not recommended. I wouldn't let this experience scare anyone, though I do see concern. I hope you feel better soon and heal quickly.

I'm so glad you wrote about this. Hubby just heard about this on the radio from one of the announcers and wanted to check into it since he doesn't like needles. He usually gets the gas first. I will show him what you wrote, and I think he will agree to going to the regular dentist that uses just gas.
