I have a one year old Cocker Spaniel and he is very nervous/scared when at the dog park. I take him to doggy day care frequently and he plays very freely. He has only been to the park a handful of times. Does he just need to get used to it or do some dogs not like the atmosphere at dog parks?
Thanks for any help.

From experience , I would avoid dog parks and if your cocker is happy in doggy daycare, keep that up for your socialization..

Sometimes the atmosphere at dog parks can be downright hostile. There are so many subtle signals other dogs are giving off that we can't possibly pick up on, everything the the other dog's body language to their smells.

If you dog is that scared, obviously he is not enjoying himself. Not only that but jerkish dogs (they do exist) may pick up on the fact that he is insecure and start harassing him, making it even more uncomfortable or even downright dangerous. Dog fights resulting in huge vet bills or even the death of one of the dogs at a dog park are not unheard of.

Jynx has the right idea. Go with what you dog is comfortable with. Dog parks can be fun, but they can be very risky too. If your dog doesn't enjoy it, there's no reason to risk going.

The problem with dog parks is sometimes there are dog there that are a bit aggressive and there are also pet owners that dont care about what's happening around them, whether their dog is starting to be aggressive towards other dogs and etc.

I opened up a 16 acre treeline field for people to come and let their dogs run around.
This year alot of people and dogs have been showing up, and I have to agree with the other poster here .. downright hostile.
There's a few people that come and form a group, which is fine with me, but these people have no concern for the others who walk their dogs there who are local. The people who drive in, are the people with no concern and in fact are the bullies with their dogs.
I had my first complaint this summer from a 12 year old girl, came to my door telling me there was a group of adults allowing their dogs to circle and bark like crazy on her Collie, one of adults dog stole her dogs toy and they never gave it back. They just called the dog to them and kept walking.
It's silly I know, but WTF. I went down to the tree line right away, to see them walking to their cars with the toy in the ladies hand. I was pissed.
They told me they didn't know where their dog found it.
If that was for example Granduer or Sara's toy, in a situation circle like that, there would have been a fight.
Soooo, I dunno. I think this was a bad idea.

If the field is on your property, you may be held liable if a dog or person gets injured. I would ask a lawyer about it and close it to the public if there is risk of a lawsuit - not work the liability IMO.

I do not like dog parks. Reggin was attacked by an unaltered male pittie when he was 8 weeks old. My fiance ended up holding Reggin so this one male could not get to him. The dog kept circling us. Eventually the dog snapped my fiance in the face as well as reggin as we were sitting in the grass. He has had major trust issues with other males ever since. A 12 week old male boxer also attacked him. It was nuts. Bad bad luck with dog parks.
