My mother attempted sucide in front of me when I was 12, and told me that if I loved her, I wouldn't call for help.

For me, personally, I won't ever view it as an unselfish act.

Yes, I feel pity, but I've been on the other side, and the resentment has never gone away.
I feel for you, I was 15..

However, I won't ever view it as a selfish act. My mother was at that point in time, mentally unstable and unhealthy and I will never blame her for what she thought at that time was the right thing to do.

I don't believe I even posted that on a public message board since it's information that I haven't even shared with many close friends; I guess it's the anonymous nature and the fact I'm very emotional about the subject gets me going sometimes. Sorry for the massive hijacking.

Anyway, I appreciate your opinion, corgi_love, since I don't believe there are really any right ways respond to or feel about a trauma like that...and I don't think any two reasons for suicide can be the same. I think what made it so hard on me was that I was a single child to a single mom, with no support. For me, as HARD as I try to forgive, I just haven't found the strength. I envy you that you've found that peace. Especially now that I'm a mother, god help anyone who ever inflicted that kind of pain on my children, let alone myself.

I don't mean to drag this on, but I don't think anyone knows but my boyfriend. I only felt safe to say because you did. Anyway, I think it really depends on the situation, and everyone is different. But at least we aren't alone, I've never met anyone who went through that. Anyway.. *hug*

(hugs everyone)

Coming from the perspective of someone who was committed due to an unsuccessful attempt at suicide (not due to a lack of trying on my part I'll tell you) when I was younger I can tell you that in that mental state you cannot for the life of you see the light at the end of the tunnel. Sure it can come across as selfish, maybe it is but who is one to judge a man we don't know?

Do you people who have never felt it, know just how desperate you have to be to try and end it all? Think about it.

Please don't tell any of us that have been touched by this to "think about it." It's been done; I promise.

I'm bowing out of this discussion...

That is precicely why I said people who have NEVER felt it. You have felt it. You have seen it happen. You speak from experience. You feel the way you do and that is fine. We don't have to agree. I was not speaking to you when I posted that.
