A Question about offal

OKay, I just decided to switch Buster to completley raw, I'll keep a small packet of Orijen for emergencies and treat balls in the cupboard but other than that I'd like to try him on just meat for a while and a few vegies here and there maybe.

Timing worked out well because mum and I had an argument and she told me I could buy all his food from now on, which suits me fine

So he's doing well, he's really not mad on chicken frames but he likes necks and he's a good chewer so I'm find with that and wings and stuff, I have some beef trim aswell and I got some ox liver from the butcher.

Now I've discovered he's so not into raw offal, not in the slightest. Won't touch it, he's picky enough as it is. Does cooking it make it loose some of its benefits? We used to cook it into their mince/vegies/pasta mix but I'd rather skip cooking it if thats better.

I've cut some up small for him toniught and mixed it in with his trim (and an entire rump steak someone didn't eat at work last night so I stole and brought home ) and I'll see if he'll eat it if I sneak it in.


Our butcher also sells chicken pet mince, its just mince frames and chicken heart/liver. He ate t one night than wouldn't touch it again for days after that till I gave it to Sophie, so getting his offal that way is kinda out I guess. Plus I'm not mad on giving him mince because I don't know exactly whats in it.

Anyone have dogs that just don't like offal? How do you get around it? He's pretty picky about everything he eats, I only had chicken frames for him for 2 nights last week and he just wouldn't eat most of it and he ended up getting potato mash and low quality kibble for dinner because thats all I have (which he loved by the way)

My dogs won't eat raw liver unless it is pureed and mixed into meat. I don't give a lot of liver, anyway. So, I do grind or puree offal and mix some into their meat mixture. Neither seem to mind it that way.

Grind and mix. Try mixing it with other ground meat, eggs, canned fish, warm cooked brown rice, etc.

^^^That's exactly what I do for Zeus. He doesn't like offal either. I puree it and mix it with egg and yogurt. He slurps it right down without a problem.

I had to cook it lightly for Meg the first couple of times. I just cooked it less and less each time until she would eat it raw. I probably only cooked it about six times total. I do still mix it with other stuff, but she no longer picks around it.

I cut it up small last night and mixed it in with rump steak and meat trim and he picked all around it lol.

I might try lightly cooking it first and see if I can get him to eat it that way because I have a feeling mother will want me to buy my own blender if I intend on blending liver. Or I could just slice it very thin.

lol he sounds like Gunnar and fish. I try and sneak it in mixed with ground meat and he'll pick around it. I think it'll need to get chopped up real small and snuck in there.

I'm lucky, my crew loves liver. It's the first thing they eat. If it's on the bottom of the bowl they'll move stuff out of the way to get to it.

Many new dogs do not care for organ meats. But they don't have to be added in the first day, you can hold off for a few weeks until the dog is easily eating and accepting the rest of the diet.

Is a chicken frame chicken without the meat? You want meat, some bone, some organ. Wings and frames are probably good at first becuase they keep the stool firm, but meatier pieces will be needed for maintaince.

He's eaten mainly raw all his life, I've just taken him off his kibble and am going to do his diet all myself for a couple of months and see if I see much/any improvment. Plus Orijen is costing me $30 for 2.5kg plus postage atm.

The frame is basically the left over chicken aftre they take the necks/legs/wings/insides. there is usually a bit of liver left on the inside of it and it has a decent amount of meat on it. He's kinda gone off them recently, he isn't big into "wet" meats, like the necks at the supermarket.
But the necks from the butcher he loves, they're bigger and not as slippery and he likes them.
