I was watching the history channel... and they had a special on glass, saying that it is the greatest invention ever. TV's are made of glass, computers are made of glass, windows are made of glass, glasses are well, made of glass...

I would have to disagree. I think the greatest invention ever is the plunger, followed by glass. I mean... when the toilet gets clogged EVERYTHING stops!

Infact, if we wanted to really get back at another country, we should steal all the plungers and then clog that nation's capital's toilets... hehehe....

:rofl1::rofl1::rofl1::rofl1:

hmm well the worst ever would be gunpowder, Scientology, or the motorcar hands down in my book.

Hmm...BEST is such a defining term. Probably birth control.

But without beer, we'd have no reason to make fire.

Touche...so really the inventor of fire (or method to start fire) got some hooch that was distilled by a fire started from a lightning strike and was thus inspired.

Beer, greatness in a can.

My top 5 would be gunpowder, the internal combustion engine, the airplane, refrigeration, and alcohol.

Gunpowder, because it advanced the art of demolition and construction considerably.
The internal combustion engine, because it gave us the car and trucks, allowing us to live farther from cities and have a better quality of life by getting items to market faster and in better condition.
The airplane, because it allows international travel quickly, and eventually allowed us to go into space. All of the technology that was developed for that purpose has trickled down to the everyday person, improving their lives.
Refrigeration, because it allows food to be kept for longer and transported across long distances without rotting.
And finally alcohol, because in ancient times alcohol was the only safe liquid to drink due to it being boiled during distillation, which normal drinking water never was.

Refrigerators were ice boxes before electricity !
But the ice melted.... and no more refrigeration. Not to mention the ice had to be taken from natural sources of ice, and couldn't be made in a freezer, since there was no refrigeration yet. That really limited the practicality of it for long term transport (such as flying in fruit from south america to a store in Washington)

The huge cubes were delivered by horse drawn wagons encased in sawdust . Cut from the lakes during the winter and lasted year around . When need , my grandparents just put a sign in their window " ICE " . I still have her ice pick !

Wow.

And all this time they've had us convinced the standard was sliced bread . . .
sliced bread, as in the kind that comes from the grocery store in a bag, is only good for one thing... Toast! just like american cheese in the little baggy is only good for one thing... giving dogs pills!

other than that... bakery bread and real cheese all the way! ooooohhhh and maybe pouilly-fuisse from Louis Jadot. with some freshly cut up fruits... *mouth is starting to water* YUMMMMEEEEEE!

I totally agree . . . except on the American cheese. I use peanut butter for dog pills, lol!

I can't remember the last time I ate a slice of commercially sliced bread. :)
