Which P&S camera is best to buy?

I don't have the patience for manual cameras. I like cameras that are automatically programmed.

I have a Minolta Dimage 4.0 that takes pics & videos but want to buy a newer camera.

Which P&S camera will take great pics?

Should I just buy the Nikon D40 and use it in program mode?

Well I have a Canon SX100 and love it. So easy to operate. Yes you can do the manual if you want too, but it is great all by itsself. The pictures come out great. And its resonably priced as well.

I love Nikons personally. Nikon D40 is a great camera. I just ordered the D60 which is pretty much the same thing only with a few differences.

As far as Point and Shoot, I really like my moms Sony Cybershot 6.0

I'm not sure which year model it is, but it is really small, not too heavy, and takes pretty nice pictures. It has a lot of features, but if you don't want to use them, you don't have to. It has a fully automatic setting, and then you can do a lot manually with it as well.

It was reasonably priced when my mother bought it as well.

I got the Canon SX100 (at borzoimom's suggestion on the other forum, thank you borzoi) and LOVE it. Good video, great photos.

Barb, I'd really say go with the D40 and just use it on auto. I'm using the little Coolpix, and while it's a far sight better than the other PoS cameras I've had in my hands, it still sucks and the photos still suck.

I find I have to force myself to remember to take pics because I just do not even enjoy taking them anymore. I'd way rather use my old 35mm and I would if I could afford to have the film developed on a regular basis.

with the D40 you would have to think about what lens you want--but I love my Nikon D60 as opposed to the point and shoot. If you want video capability too--then a p&s might have that as well.

Hmm. I find this thread ironic as I am looking to get a P&S.

Sometimes the D40 is just too much to lug around... especially in places like... oh, I dunno, Vegas, lol. For some people they don't care about the quality as long as they have the image to keep forever.

I love the D40, don't get me wrong, and now that I'm learning more about it, I find myself taking more amazing pictures, but sometimes you just need to take a picture... and not have to want to worry about the ins and outs of it.

Anyways, something to consider.

It is WAY MORE CONVENIENT for me to get pics of Ella using my P&S than my D60. That is, when I have to take them by myself. The D60 is too hard to work with one hand.

And this reminds me of a thread I started on a photography forum today. I wanted to know the difference between a snapshot and a photograph because the people there often said, "Oh, this pic might look snapshotty" and I didn't know what that meant in terms of look and composition.

I just got a new slim line digital pocket camera that does it all 10 mega pixels. I am going to get the newest Sony SLR next. I want one crystal clear images of my dogs for my web site.

I have two Sonys and love them, just kinda now getting out dated some. I have an old Cannon with a change of different lenses, hard to use and must get photos developed but clear pictures from it. I am a collector you might say in cameras.? lol.

I got a brochure from Consumer Reports in the mail and it had a small article about P&S cameras saying the most expensive one is not the best in their opinion.

They rate the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-H3 the best. Here's a review of it:

I am thinking about getting the Nikon CoolpixP50. Anybody have one? Like them?

I've been using one. I suppose, as far as a P&S goes it's quite nice. Frankly, for me, it takes all the joy out of taking pictures though. I'd rather use my old Nikon 35mm. Unfortunately, getting film developed is just something I can't afford right now . . . that, and it appears that my cousin, Tracy, the one who was mooching off my parents, has been coming back by their house when they aren't here and has "liberated" some things.

One of them appears to be my camera, which was in the big case with three of my lenses (including my favorite 70-210 mm), my flash, and several filters . . .

generally speaking canon makes better p&s cameras than nikon

Canons have good point and shoot cameras.

Agreed, I LOVED my Canon P&S (it was a powershot... a 560 maybe?) I miss it terribly.
