I have to tell you some recent reported posts that have come in (and I'm talking about several) have been... well, unworthy of clicking the red triangle button.

Maybe here are some ground rules to go by/check off when you think you might need to report a post:

1. Have any Chazhound Rules been broken?
2. Do you know Chazhound Rules? (No? Looky here.)

** If you answered yes to the above, then please do report the post**

3. Are you reporting the post because you simply do not like the person?
4. Are you reporting the post because you simply do not agree with what the individual has said?

** If you answered yes to these, walk away from the thread and do not report the post.**

I know...

it's hard, you don't like the person.

Maybe they are being an ass by your standards, but it is well known by now that Chazhound is an open forum.

I know, rules suck sometimes, but it's for the greater good for all.

Soooo be a big boy/girl, pull up your big kid panties, put down your sippy cup, tuck your teddy/blankie under your arm and walk away. Yes... walk away. You can do it! I'm here cheering you on! ;)

Good thread you made. Some people join all these forums only to get booted for rudeness, mouthyness etc. They go from one to another starting trouble.

Best to ignore ignorance and keep doing your own thing, they get caught and soon banned.:D

Good post!

I do have a question tho...when you click the report button, it says its used for spam, problematic posts, rudeness....But is rudeness breaking a rule? Because somebody might think something is rude..others may not. :p

Good reminder ! Especially the rudeness issue . If you wouldn't say it to the person's face ....don't print it . Especailly when you use #%&*(@! symbols .

I understand the point of this post...being a Mod elsewhere I know baseless Reports are not fun...BUT I do want to say having read the rules I understand why you might get some that YOU...personally do not feel should have been reported.

From the rules:
"Chazhound Forum does not allow any post or messages that are obscene, vulgar, sexually-oriented, hateful, threatening, or otherwise violative of any laws"

I see posts like the bolded, daily here...and they are fine (fun?). I am only saying...it is a "rule" that is violated here...often.

From the rules:
1. Please be respectful to other members and moderators. You don’t have to like or agree with everyone, but please state your thoughts in a respectful manner. Absolutely no name calling. No personal attacks.

Again...we just had a couple threads in a row where personal attacks were made.

From the rules:
2. Do not “bash†new members because they don’t know about puppymills, backyard breeding or any other practice you may not agree with. Don't jump to conclusion about new members. They may not be a "troll" just because they ask a question that seems obvious to others. Education is the best way the change any problem.

I have seen this also...many times...MANY times. It is almost a game here to do this. I do believe that handling trolls...from outing them to removing them is a Mod/Admin issue. But I admit I have had my fun "exposing" said same as a mere member. But again...it is a rule..that is somewhat..."flexible" here it would seem.

I guess my point is...is takes a while as a member here to get that...tho the rules are posted...they are not in stone...not even close to it. I don't know if these reports you speak of are from newer members...BUT I do think that if they are...the rules themselves might be the cause. I am totally 100% fine with how things are done around here most of the time...but it DOES get confusing when it comes to the overall across the board importance of the rules...esp as a newbie.

What I think is the report feature is a link to the Mod...and IF you are not sure about something...you SHOULD report it and allow a Mod to make the call. If it is excessive than perhaps that person should be contacted privately. But if there is MORE than one or two or three people reporting issues...maybe it's not them specifically...but the overall rules vs reality issue that has them confused.

I may not be making ANY sense here, and I apologize if that's the case...but I did want to mention the above. If something is "well known by now" than perhaps the rules should be tweaked to reflect the more laid back...vibe of the forum as a whole to avoid confusion from newer members?

My responses will be highlighted throughout, I hope I am coherent enough, I just woke up. :p

I understand the point of this post...being a Mod elsewhere I know baseless Reports are not fun...BUT I do want to say having read the rules I understand why you might get some that YOU...personally do not feel should have been reported.

Without airing the reported posts and the reasons behind it (because that would simply be uncool) I can tell you that the purpose of my writing this post was aimed at 3 and 4. If ANY rules are broken, please do report, mods do not read every thread, but if you (generally speaking) simply do not like the person, please don't stalk them and then proceed to report each post that you do not like. This was my point. It all comes down to being the bigger person and walking away, its harder than it sounds, but it feels better when it's done.

True and they never get reported.. and people participate. What the community wants the community gets. Except for drive by porn spam.. ick.

From the rules:
1. Please be respectful to other members and moderators. You don’t have to like or agree with everyone, but please state your thoughts in a respectful manner. Absolutely no name calling. No personal attacks.

Again...we just had a couple threads in a row where personal attacks were made.

Then why weren't they reported? I wasn't around for the latest round of heated threads, so I didn't read them, but being a Mod elsewhere, you should know that all the dirty stuff is not aired. We DO send warnings to people via PM's and such... please and this goes for everyone, do not assume we let things slide by because you don't see any repercussions on the boards themselves.

From the rules:
2. Do not “bash†new members because they don’t know about puppymills, backyard breeding or any other practice you may not agree with. Don't jump to conclusion about new members. They may not be a "troll" just because they ask a question that seems obvious to others. Education is the best way the change any problem.

There is a huge difference between a troll and a member coming to share and learn. I say have your fun with trolls- they won't be back and if they do come back, they get banned. ;) Should we be respectful to people who come and are inexperienced and lack knowledge? Absolutely.

I guess my point is...is takes a while as a member here to get that...tho the rules are posted...they are not in stone...not even close to it. I don't know if these reports you speak of are from newer members...BUT I do think that if they are...the rules themselves might be the cause. Totally understand. We have rules to "go by" but we try to let people govern themselves.. or hang themselves, lol. It does take awhile to learn the ropes.. just as it with any new place.

Like I said, if rules are broken, then yes, report the post. However, if it is from pure dislike of the person and their message... well, it's not okay, don't do it, walk away. I truly do not feel that there is any issue with understanding rules and guidelines.

I'll continue to read every reported post I get and look into why it was reported, but it would save me from a lot of eye rolling if the reasons were legit.. like someone was actually insulted, or someone was bashing, name calling, etc.. All too often we get reported posts from simple dislike of another being...and well, it's time we all grew up in that aspect. OR! Maybe we learn to get along... agree to disagree...respect our differences and just have fun. :)

Very much agreed here...

Generally speaking:

Are you feeling bold because it's the internet and whoever you are aiming your shotgun of insults at is a world away? Don't let it catch up to you. Treat others as you would like yourself to be treated. Treat others with the kindness that you treat yours dogs (positive reinforcement, etc). Just be kind... and if you have to think twice about posting something, then do NOT post it.

I agree that forum culture dictates what is allowable...and I think rules are far from concrete and as any pirate will tell you...they're more guidelines than rules.

But the fair thing is to make that very plain...
I honestly could see from a new person's perspective...a read through of the rules...NOT matching up with reality on this forum. Nothing needs to be done about that...but I do think it needed mentioning.

Think of them as Guidlines, rather than Rules ;)

And remember, it takes an extremely rare, egregious case for us to ban or even issue an infraction without at least one warning.

We really are a largely self-regulating group here and those who lack the ability to do so tend to not last, mostly choosing to leave. Most of the time, though, new members get a taste of freedom and like it well enough to watch and unlearn things that have been ingrained on more tightly ruled sites. :)
