So after much deliberation, I put down a deposit for a show quality, brown Newfoundland bitch! I am so excited right now, I simply cannot wait! I found such a great breeder, who happens to have two brown litters planned for this year. She is so educated on the breed and is the kind of breeder that I will be able to have a great friendship with, and a mentor whenever needed. The puppies are a little pricey, at least more so than others I have come across, but it's not a huge issue for me at the moment(I sound so terrible right here lol), so it's alright with me. Co-owning and contract is perfect and caring, it goes as far as agreeing to never shave your Newfie to agreeing to keep my Newf on NuVet supplements for life.

Anyway! Here is the bitch and stud for the first litter. I'm crossing my fingers, I'd love to have a puppy out of Noah <3
"Noah" Ch. Knowing What I Want vom Riesrand (German Import) x "Sugar" Briana's Brown Sugar

She was bred and confirmed pregnant, and her due date between May 26th to June 2nd!

Couldn't hold it in any longer :D *dance*

Thanks all :D! I will take millions of pictures! I've never had a 'giant' before, and giant breeds have been my dreams since I was a really young kid, so now that I finally have the space for one and can get one, it's like a dream come true right now.

And Regis is oh so playful, he will be happy to have a companion that wants to play with him(my kitten gets so fed up somtimes :D)

They also come in BLUE/grey...those are really interesting.
Grey, yes! They are so neat looking, but are super hard to find.. If I ever found one I'd be all over it XD Grey, Brown, Black, & Landseer. Sometimes Landseer but where brown replaces the black, but it's not an accepted color on the standard.

OMG I am SOOOOOOOO jealous!! I have wanted a Landseer Newfie since I was a little girl when I was knocked over by one and fell in Newfie love. Before I got Bodi, I was heavily researching Landseers, but my hubby said NO WAY - THEY'RE TOOO BIG! So I got a BMD instead - he's my little Newfie. Someday though, I will own one. CONGRATS!!

Congrats!

What's the pedigree on this puppy, may I ask? I don't mean to rain on your parade, I *really* don't - puppies are FUN, and I may be missing some information, but purely from what I can see on OFA and the website, I'm seeing a few red flags. I checked out the breeder (at least I think it's the breeder - same photos, same dog names), and the dam is listed on the website and OFA as Briana's Sugar Bear, not Briana's Brown Sugar. She is OFAed for elbows, but no hips. She has produced a puppy with hip dysplasia (Wildangel's Princess Sierrasky), and her relatives have suspiciously "BYB" names (like Mr Texas, Falling Starlet, Sweet Lucy Brown, Lisa's Lovely Lokie, etc.). It doesn't look like she's been shown, and no dogs in her pedigree seem to be in the OFA database - just her half-siblings and her progeny.

I did some detective work and found out her sire is Sire: Wild Bill’s Rockin’ Rufus, dam is Wild Bill’s Angel Wing - neither seem to have been shown, neither are finished. Neither are OFAed, that I can find.

Plus, four litters due in a three-month time frame on the website (and only one of those litters has two finished parents). Plus the contract requiring NuVet supplements (you'll probably have to put in the breeder's code, so she'll get monetary kickbacks from your orders - the NuVet supplements are VERY popular with commercial kennels, mills and BYBs)... I'm just seeing a lot of red flags, and calling them as I see them. :(

My defence.. I hope I'm right.. I already gave her a $300 deposit... :/ And her show name was a mixup on my part. I appreciate you doing that, everyone needs a slap in the face everyonce in a while. I'm going to PM you(I hope that's okay) too because I really, really want your opinion!

Noah's pedigree is as shown. Brown Newfoundlands are very hard to show because though it says all Newfoundland colors are 'equal' they are often not picked over black Newfoundlands, or even Landseer Newfoundlands. So it is not shocking to see a dog being bred that is not a Champion. On top of that, if you look in almost any dogs pedigree you will not find all Ch. sires and dams.

I have sent her an email asking about her show career, I should ask about her pedigree though. Yes, she does breed a lot... But, if you have the time to spend with your dogs, why not? How can it be wrong to breed too much, but not to keep 15 'show' dogs kept in kennels more than half of their lives? :/ Confused I guess. Or maybe just making up excuses for the wrong reasons. I don't often run into reputable breeders with questionnaires and without contracts that have so much detail care in them..

Also.. There is a health garantee on every puppy. So if she develops displasia I will get a new puppy. As for the NuVet stuff, I will ask if I can have a receit sent to her instead, so that she makes no income out of me using her breeder number.

If I am wrong, how do I find out? Where do I go now? I mean.. What do I do from here? What's the most.. polite way to address this? Ahh :/

edit- Forgot to add.. NuVet Plus Supplements.. I have to have a refferral number in order to buy them. I have sent an email to them asking what she gets out of it right now.

edit 2- Do you want to see her contract? I mean it's two pages long of just doing the right thing with your puppy.. I just can't see this as being true if she shows her dogs, and she cares so much for them, and why even bother getting her dogs tested? I'm panicing right now :/

1) They breed dogs that are not correct for the Standards for health, temperament, and how they *suppose* to look. This is why many of the back-yard breedings that take place produce puppies which grows into adults that are incorrect.

2) They breed dogs that have the same faults, which in turn, compounds faults into the puppies.

3) They do not know the breed standards for the breed they are breeding.

4) They do not know what genetic (health) issues are for the breed they are breeding, they say that there are NO problems associated with the breed, or ask, “what problems?â€

5) They are not there for you IF you have problems or questions through-out the lifetime of your dog.

6) They do not require spay/neuter contracts, nor do they supply you with a written contract/guarantee, nor do they require the dog be returned to them if you can no longer keep the animal.

7) They think they can make just a little money breeding.

8) Some will screen potential buyers and some won’t. Most really don’t care what happens to the puppy after it leaves their house.
None of that is true of her.

Another,

None of the BYB list applies to her.

How exciting!!! Newfoundlands are gorgeous powerful dogs. The first one I ever seen was a deep reddish chocolate.

Sire's info from OFA:
http://www.offa.org/display.html?appnum=1186633#animal

Dam's (Sizzle already gave info - figured I'd post anyways):
http://www.offa.org/display.html?appnum=1229886#animal

I'm with Sizzledog. Have you asked about the puppies produced between these two? Looks like this is a repeat breeding.

I found a "pet quality" contract on their website, but would be interested to see what terms need to be met before the bitch is bred in a "show quality" contract. How did you find this breeder? I would try getting in touch with their regional club (they are members of the Great Lakes Newf Club) and the national club (they are also members) to see if there is more information to be found if you haven't already... I know one breeder who is a member of several yet she is someone I would never, ever recommend whatsoever having dealt with her and I know if you were to contact her breed's regional they will point you in another direction.

Sorry if I'm repeating or asking questions that have already been answered, running out the door and this caught my eye. :)

The dam has no hip number?

There is no data on the parents of either breeding partner? This is SIGNIFICANT, because knowing the hip and heart status of the other animals in the pedigree would color my opinion of using them, esp. the bitch.

Both partners have already produced animals who likely will be hip dysplastic at 2 years of age since their prelims indicate displasia.

Further research shows that the full brother of the dam has also produced a hip dysplastic offspring. http://www.offa.org/display.html?appnum=1280589#animal

The other thing that strikes me is WHY are they breeding these 2 dilutes together?

It raises my eyebrows, and makes me think that they don't really have the best interests of the breed at heart, but more like selling puppies.

I also hope that this breeder DID NOT TELL YOU they can sell you a show quality puppy, because there is no such thing. Puppies are PROSPECTS. There are so many things that can go wrong to ruin the show career of a promising puppy before it starts it would be impossible to list them all.

And the last thing I want you to REALLY THINK about is this:

How will getting another puppy mend your heart IF the one you get has HD? Because it won't. You will be possibly looking at expensive surgical interventions, or a life of restricted activity because of it.

I would urge you to call this breeder and discuss these issues. ASK why this bitch with no hip number is being bred. ASK why her hip results are not disclosed at OFA. ASK why they are breeding 2 dilutes together. And ESPECIALLY ask WHERE IS THE HEALTH TESTING INFO ON THE PARENTS OF BOTH BREEDING PARTNERS.

The Canadian breed standard does not allow for this color, altho the AKC one does. If you a dog to show, this is not where I personally would be looking.

LOTS OF RED FLAGS.

Throw off the puppy fever, and take a hard look at what you are doing here. I know it's so hard to do, but I bet you won't be sorry later if you back out of this and rethink it.

Keep in mind with alot of dilute colors come with ALOT of extra problems. No OFA is a bad thing exspesialy on a breed like a newfie. Dilutes are verry hard to finish. Now with brown poodles parts of the coat lightens as the dog ages and I have been told a non uniform coat color is a big fault. Is this the same in newfies? If so you need to consider this if you want to show
