Like one blue one brown...why is it I always get asked if he can see out of his blue eye? Even the lady that worked at the vets [front desk] asked me bout that. The vet didn't say anything about his eye. I don't think its common for shih tzus though. He doesn't bump into anything though. He follows treats with both eyes. Is this something I should worry about though?

the reson many people may ask is sometimes a dog with a blue eye is blind...its more however for a dog with a blue eye and that is white on that side to be deaf rather than blind. and is a common issue in merles from...less than great...breeding (ie double merles ect)

if he has no issues and your vet doesnt see a problem i wouldnt worry

I'd call it crystal blue or aqua or something...lol.

If he can see out of it, i'm gonna say he's fine!

One of my Bridge Babies, Mugsie, had two different colored eyes. One was brown, and one was the palest blue, almost white. He did have visual impairments in his blue eye. (He was also unilaterally deaf)

How could you tell he was impaired in that eye? He was very stunning.

Thank you.

It was very obvious with him. He was hand shy if you went to touch him on that side of his face/head. He bumped into things on that side. You could just tell. Also, I don't think it's visible from the photo since it's small, but there was some visible deformity to his eye - the pupil was very small and mishaped.

I cannot count the number of times people have asked if Fozzie is blind in his blue eye... so get used to it! hehe.

Both of his eyes are completely healthy. Sometimes I want to ask them, "Ohh, you have blue eyes... are you blind?" But I hold it back. ; D I don't mind if some one asks how/why he has the blue eye, or whatever, but when they ask flat-out if he's blind, it rubs me the wrong way. If he was blind, I would probably be really sensitive to people running up and yelling "HEY! Is that dog blind!?"

Fozzie's blue eye is fairly light blue. I've heard that really light blue happens when the eye color genes are overridden by another factor. Whatever eye color the dog was supposed to have is washed out, and the lack of pigment causes blue eyes. Either that, or his Dad had blue eyes, or both of his parents had blue eye genes. I would describe his eye as light blue, like Mugsie (who is the cutest EVAR, btw!!!). His foster parents described his eye as "white" when he was a puppy... Iunno about that.

Does either of Valentino's parents have a blue eye? The cat's eyes look like classic blue eyes, to me. What is his pupil like? Some blue-eyed dogs will have "dropped" pupils, which will be round but lower in the eye instead of centered. Some have "starbust" pupils, which are oddly shaped. I've noticed it's pretty normal, in sunlight, for the pupil in Fozzie's blue eye to be smaller than the brown eye. Lighter eyes do let in more light, after all. As long as Valentino's pupils look normal, there shouldn't be anything to worry about.

Oh noes...but I know that's how I feel. There's people with blue eyes, and guess what they're not blind. I bet they don't ask husky owners that question either. I'm bet one of these days I'm going to get someone who says is he mix with husky?...I will die of laugther, but I know its bound to happen lol. I have a feeling. Because all bi-color eye dogs are huskies like all dogs with spots are dalmatians. Has anyone said that about Fozzie yet? Did the believe you that he's not? LOL husky x shih tzu mix, now that'll be something to brag bout huh?

I know I said this before, but Fozzie is too cute, omg.

Both his parents are brown eyed dogs, as well as his littermates...not sure bout the sires and dams of the parents.

I had a gut feeling one or some pups were going to get blue eyes. Well I WISHED it, and it came true. That's too awesome, esp. with BOTH prents carrying the bb gene. I was little bias, because he was white [b/c all white people have blue eyes you know :p ], that he would probably be the one with the blue eyes. But the other white pup had the ''shih tzu'' look, and I haven't seen ny blue eyed shih tzus and I yet to see or think its common for brown dog [or dark dog] to have blue eyes. That'll be wicked. I wasn't expecting one eye blue, but that's even more unique. Well actually I haven't seen an all blue eyes dog in person :yikes: just as puppies.

Well if he was human he would of been real unique. But not as unique as this girl that had three colors. One eye was brown and the other eye was split, one side green the other blue. Now thats neat. She wasn't white *gasp* lol, she was puerto rican.

I don't know why blue eyes and deafness/blindness are related (I'd assume it has something to do with the recessiveness of blue) but most blue eyed dogs I've seen are blind and/or deaf. Not all, granted, and I don't ask people whether their dog can see/hear (should be obvious on the former and after a bit of observation on the latter) but I always assume they are and act accordingly until proven other wise.

I have YET to meet a dog with one or both blue eyes who is blind... except for one all white Dane I met at the dog park. But, his blindness was obvious. I didn't notice him walking up behind me and checking me out, but when I went to pet him I could just tell. He wasn't looking directly at me, and his eyes were not "normal", they were smaller than usual and very light. He was cautious, but he was a really sweet dog. With Aussies, the dogs who are blind and/or deaf usually do have blue eyes... but that's because double merle breedings produce all merle puppies, and most merle dogs have one or two blue eyes.

LOL, I agree, Juicy! I wonder if owners of Huskies or Aussies get asked if their dogs are blind all of the time... I kind of doubt it, but who knows? Actually, most people suggest that Fozzie is part Aussie. NO way, jose! If he is, the only aspect he inherited was his blue eye. He has a smooth coat, a totally different face, massive prick ears, a completely different personality, etc. Quite a few people ask if he's part Husky, and I tend to think he might be. His personality and some of his features are really Sibey, and he looked basically like a stumpy-legged Husky puppy. All I know for sure is that his Mom was a Cardigan, who was impregnated by a dead-beat father. ; D Cardigans can also have blue eyes, being that there are merle Cardis.

I've never seen a Shih Tzu with a blue eye! It's really adorable. I met a Boston with a blue eye once, and I almost died. Odd eyes really give dogs a lot of character... of course, Valentino and Fozz would be just as cute with brown eyes, but it sets them apart.

It's pretty common within my breed. I can't vouch for other breeds, but within danes, it's not unusual for blue eyes to coincide with some degree of visual or hearing impairment. Especially with very lightly marked harlequins or whites with lack of pigment on the face/head.

Of course, this has to do with the merle gene when it comes to danes...

Ooooh if I had a pound everytime someone asked me...

"Is she blind in that eye?"

Bo's eye is very white, so I can understand, but still I am now so used to saying.. no, it's just blue.

It's actually not ALL blue, it has brown at the top, and her brown eye has a tiny fleck of blue in it.

I think it's VERY cool how Bo has a touch of opposite color in each eye.

Unique :) I have met dogs with 1/2 and 1/2 in one eye, or one of each..........but never one that looks quite like Bo's.
