Bosley is HW positive. I spent a some extra special time with him today. It's all the more I could to make up for this horrible, irresponsible world that has ended this guy's life.

Tessa, only you could smile that radiantly while you're washing litter boxes :)

You've got some good looking dogs there . . . I surely hope they get the homes they deserve.

Proud of you for your special treatment of Bosley. Most people would wall themselves off from him and not get close.

Is that a pyr? We've been getting tons of those in at our shelter. Volunteering is wonderful, isn't it? I go every Saturday, and even though it's heart-wrenching, it's worth it all when that special animal you have fallen in love with gets adopted.

Yes. He was a humane case. People had him out on a chain his entire life and when reported for his conditions, the owners just planned on killing him instead of surrending him. Somehow though, we were able to get him into our care. Despite his lack of training and socialization, he is the SWEETEST most mellow wonderful guy. He makes a greaaat pillow. :)

I work on Mon and Tues feeding and caring for animals, but also volunteer extra time both days to train, temperament test, and take pics and vids. I go every Sunday, and try to make it up on Saturdays as well. And of course, work whenever they give me hours. (Yay! I got 6.5 hrs today!!!)

I wouldn't trade it for the world. I absolutely love it. Heartbreaking. I fought so hard to not bawl when playing with Bosley and wished so badly I could save him.. but we're having a hard enough time getting the pits out of the shelter. No rescues are available.. they are all full in the area. And we just don't have the space or money right now to treat him. And as awful as it sounds, I so wished it would have been the other dog that came in today. You always hope the sweetest ones aren't HW pos, but it seems that it almost the case.

What is HW? My brain's on the fritz tonight

Nevermind. Heartworm. Dammit. And it's so easily treatable. All it takes is money . . . :(
We normally treat most all of the cases that come in. The only times we don't is usually because we are completely full and need to make room anyway. Sometimes I wish we'd use our funds better though. Perhaps if we woudln't have treated the severely dog aggressive lab we have in the shelter for his HW we woudl have the room and funds for this dog, who is practically as perfect as they come in a shelter.

And just somethign interesting. The three later puppies.. the ones in the kennel together were the puppies of a dog we had adopted out. She was HW positive, we treated her, and somehow the puppies survived!! No one even KNEW she was pregnant until she had already been adopted out!

Hmmm . . . . any chance there's a rescue or foster that would take him? Maybe do some checking over the net or with some of the local vets?

Oh, and you need to network with the folks at pitbull-chat.com to help you get Pits into rescues and homes. :)

We've got our two pit pups(the black and the chocolate) going to foster/rescue next weekend. We're transporting them an hour away to be picked up by pit rescue. The adult pit they can't take though because he's been aggressive towards a male at the shelter and they don't take any dogs at all with aggression.
